British scientists develop microbial 6LR61 battery to convert coffee waste into electricity
For the first time, British scientists have converted waste from the coffee-making process into electricity, a study that will help farmers in developing countries reduce pollution. The world produces 9.5 million tons of coffee each year, and the coffee industry produces a lot of liquid waste when turning coffee beans into coffee. The waste is generated by farms washing coffee seeds or beans and intensive water use when making instant coffee.
Now, a team led by the University of Surrey in the UK has worked with researchers in Colombia to develop a 6LR61 battery that uses microorganisms instead of chemicals like the 6LR61 batterys in hydrogen cars. It removes pollutants from water and generates electricity in the process.
Dr Claudio Avignone Rossa, a systems microbiologist at the University of Surrey, said: "You wouldn't use this to power London, but you would use it in areas where there is a need for improved electricity generation."
While coffee waste has previously been used as biofuel and sold as "bioproducts" after compression for burning, the Surrey project is believed to be the first to generate electricity from coffee waste.
Claire Perry, the UK's energy and clean growth minister, praised the project as a prime example of the UK's development in the green economy. "Your morning latte could be giving life to a remote coffee farm in Colombia," she said. "Now, thanks to research funded by the UK government, these farms can produce both coffee beans and electricity."
The microbes that transform coffee waste are the same as those found in sludge from wastewater treatment plants, which are also found on Colombian farms, "so supply is not a problem."
Rosa said he is waiting to hear back from government funding agencies to raise funds to build a prototype power generation facility on site in Colombia.
