Within the U.S. electric vehicle charging network, lead batteries will be charged with cheaper off-peak power, reducing the cost of daytime charging for fuel stations and electric vehicle owners. In particular, lead batteries can help fuel stations avoid paying "peak demand charges," the extra fees electric companies charge U.S. businesses.
In February 2018, McKinsey Management Consulting released a report titled "How Battery Storage Can Help Charge The Electric-Vehicle Market" (HowBatteryStorageCanHelpChargeTheElectric-VehicleMarket). The report points out that the reduction in demand charges alone can help fuel stations save £2,400 per month in electricity bills. McKinsey said demand fees for electric vehicle charging stations may be too high to be profitable. The company recommends that fuel station owners install two 150kWh direct current (DC) fast chargers, as well as 300kWh lead batteries. Lead batteries can be utilized to charge customers' electric vehicles during peak hours, and with smart chargers and battery management, multiple vehicles can be charged without triggering demand charges.
McKinsey said: "This configuration system can reduce the demand fee to a minimum, about $3,000 per month, which will significantly reduce costs and do not need to be passed on to consumers. Tesla has stated that it will move in this direction, and other Companies may follow suit."
