AA Ni-MH batteries

One major reason for lithium battery fire and explosion: overcharging

Overcharging generally occurs during the entire charging process of lithium batteries. Due to the common resistance of batteries, a large amount of heat is accumulated during the charging process. The protective device in lithium batteries can provide varying degrees of protection against overcharging by checking the voltage.

However, when the overcharge time is too long and the voltage continues to be too high, dendrite short circuits are prone to occur inside the lithium-ion battery, causing the temperature and pressure of the battery to continue to rise, thereby posing a risk of explosion and fire.

The second leading cause of lithium battery fire and explosion: short circuit caused by over discharge

Short circuits generally occur during the use of lithium batteries, where the battery's temperature continues to rise while maintaining regular heat dissipation.

If the battery temperature is too high due to external factors, it is easy to cause damage to the battery separator, resulting in a short circuit and excessive internal heat accumulation, leading to a chain reaction and self ignition of the battery.

The difference between lithium-ion batteries and lithium batteries

Lithium ion batteries are a type of lithium non-aqueous battery made from lithium metal or lithium alloy as the negative electrode material, organic solvents or non-aqueous inorganic solvent electrolytes, lithium molten salt batteries made from molten salts, and lithium solid electrolyte batteries made from solid electrolytes.

Li/SOCl2 battery is currently the battery with the highest specific energy (550W · h · kg-1) among the battery series applied in practice in China. The battery symbol is:

  (-)Li/LiAlCl4,SOCl2/C(+)

Lithium ion batteries and lithium batteries have different reaction equations:

Using porous carbon as the positive electrode, SOCl2 is not only a solvent, but also a positive electrode active material. The battery reaction is

  4Li+2SOCl2→4LiCl+S+SO2

Li and S will react (generate heat) at high temperatures, causing accidents. Therefore, when using, attention should be paid to avoiding short circuits and over discharges, and the data storage environment temperature should be low.

  What is a lithium-ion battery?

Lithium ion batteries do not contain any metallic lithium and can be charged.

Lithium ion batteries are formed by embedding lithium ions into carbon (petroleum coke and graphite) to form a negative electrode. The positive electrode material is commonly LixCoO2, as well as LixNiO2 and LixMnO4. The electrolyte is LiPF6+diethylene carbonate (EC)+dimethyl carbonate (DMC).

Petroleum coke and graphite as negative electrode materials are non-toxic and have abundant resources. Lithium ions are embedded in carbon, overcoming the high activity of lithium and effectively solving the safety hazards of lithium batteries. The positive electrode LixCoO2 can achieve leading levels in charge and discharge performance and lifespan, reducing costs. In short, the overall performance of lithium-ion batteries has greatly improved.
