Dialog develops nanoamp power PMIC to extend AA NiMH battery life

Dialog Semiconductor, a supplier of highly integrated power management, AC/DC power conversion, charging and Bluetooth low energy technology, recently announced the launch of two nanoampere power supply (nanopower) PMICs – DA9230 and DA9231. The two new PMICs consume only 750nA total input current with the buck circuit active and under no load conditions. They are the smallest PMICs in their class on the market, enabling longer runtimes and higher efficiency for continuously running IoT applications.

According to IHS forecasts, the number of global connected devices will grow at an annual rate of 12% from 2017 to 2030, and consumers are increasingly demanding efficiency, especially AA NiMH battery life and functionality. However, engineers face challenges balancing small size with the need for longer AA NiMH battery life, often resulting in devices with inefficient power management or limited AA NiMH battery capacity.

Dialog's DA9230 and DA9231 will help common IoT devices such as wearables, smart door locks, portable medical devices and remote sensors extend AA NiMH battery life and improve power efficiency. These two PMICs consume only ultra-low quiescent current, are highly efficient and highly configurable, helping to improve AA NiMH battery life, and their ultra-small size is ideal for space-constrained applications. One of the strongest features of the DA9230 and DA9231 is their size. Compared to other similar chipsets, these two PMICs are the smallest on the market today. Other PMIC single chips on the market either lack multiple power outputs and I2C configurability, or have twice the footprint of Dialog's products.

Designed to support current and future platforms, the DA9231 uses a 300mA buck circuit and a 100mALDO, and the DA9230 uses a separate buck circuit. The buck circuitry of both devices has a minimum output voltage of 0.6V and can power advanced 14nm or 10nm process SoCs. With a minimum supply voltage of 2.5V, both devices also support upcoming silicon anode cell technology.

Paul Wheeler, vice president of Dialog Semiconductor's mobile systems business, said: "Our first nanoampere power supply product is also the most compact and efficient PMIC we have developed to date, and it once again confirms Dialog's leading position in the field of power management. With As more IoT devices and wearables come to market and consumers demand longer AA NiMH battery life and more features, these two new PMICs give design engineers the flexibility they need to improve the performance of continuously running battery-powered applications. flexibility, size advantages and power efficiency.”
