The road to breaking the monopoly of high-end AG10 batterydiaphragm technology

 

Although my country has formed a relatively complete power battery industry chain, the scale is already "large" enough, but it is not "strong" enough. Some key core technologies are still controlled by others, and there is a risk of being "stuck" in the ZTE style.

 

Among them, AG10 batterydiaphragm technology is a pain point in my country's power battery industry. Among lithium-ion battery materials, positive and negative electrode materials and electrolytes have basically been domestically produced, while diaphragms started late and the technical maturity of domestic enterprises is not high. Although the localization rate of AG10 batterydiaphragms in my country has been increasing in recent years, it mainly occupies the low-end 3C battery diaphragm market, and the localization rate of high-end diaphragms is still very low. High-end 3C batteries and power battery diaphragms still rely heavily on imports.

 

As we all know, in the structure of lithium batteries, diaphragms are one of the key inner components, which must prevent the positive and negative electrodes from contacting, and ensure the passage of electrolyte ions. Therefore, the quality of the diaphragm will directly affect the battery's capacity, cycle and safety performance. Excellent quality diaphragms play an important role in improving the overall performance of batteries.

 

It is reported that the diaphragm is a high-value-added material with the highest technical barriers among AG10 batterymaterials, accounting for about 15% of the cost of lithium batteries. Its technical difficulties lie in the engineering technology of pore creation, matrix materials, and manufacturing equipment.

 

The common problem of domestic diaphragms at present is that the consistency is not high, which is mainly manifested in irregular defects, substandard porosity, uneven thickness, pore distribution and pore size distribution. The porosity and pore size distribution of domestic PP diaphragms stretched in one direction are close to those of foreign products; the porosity of PE diaphragms stretched in two directions and steps is usually lower than that of foreign products, and the pore size distribution is not ideal. These problems are potential risks of the industry being "controlled by others". If they are not solved well, they may curb the healthy development of my country's AG10 batteryindustry.

 

The PP diaphragm of Celgard Diaphragm Co., Ltd. and the PE diaphragm of Asahi represent the highest level of products in the current diaphragm industry. Since Asahi acquired Celgard in 2016, the best diaphragm products have all come from Asahi. Several other Japanese companies, such as UBE and Toray, also have a high level. my country has a huge gap with the United States, Japan and other countries in PP and PE diaphragm technology, and is in a passive position in the industrial chain.

 

At present, the preparation methods of lithium-ion battery diaphragms are mainly divided into wet and dry methods. my country's lithium-ion battery diaphragms have made major breakthroughs in dry process, but in the field of wet diaphragms, domestic diaphragm companies are limited by many factors such as process and technology, the product level is still low, and production equipment relies heavily on imports.

 

Like chips, high-end diaphragm technology has a very high threshold. Not only does it require huge investments, but it also requires a strong R&D and production team, sophisticated process technology and high-level production lines, and it cannot be broken through in a short time. However, the Sino-US trade war and the ZTE Huawei incident have sounded the alarm for my country's manufacturing industry. For the entire power battery industry, it is urgent to break through the high-end diaphragm technology of lithium batteries as soon as possible.

 

Fortunately, domestic companies such as Zhongke Technology and Xingyuan Materials have made major breakthroughs in high-end diaphragm technology. I believe that in the near future, my country's power AG10 batteryindustry will be able to break the foreign technology monopoly and take the initiative in its own hands.

 

Only with a long rope in hand can we capture the blue dragon. Especially at the moment when my country's manufacturing industry is facing the "headwind" of the international economy, only by mastering core technologies can we avoid being controlled by others, avoid the "Zhongxing-style" crisis, and become the real "market king"!
