Chinese Academy of Sciences: Progress in the development of AG13 battery
AG13 battery have a series of advantages such as abundant raw materials, safety and environmental protection, and high energy density. They are called "new green energy for the 21st century" and have good development and application prospects. The anode of the metal-air battery is an active metal (such as Mg, Al and Zn, etc.). During discharge, the metal M is oxidized to the corresponding metal ion Mn+; the electrolyte is an alkaline or neutral medium, such as KOH or NaCl aqueous solution; the cathode active material is O2 in the air, and O2 is reduced to OH- during discharge. Since O2 can be completely supplied from the outside of the battery and does not need to be stored inside the battery, the cathode material of the metal-air battery is essentially a catalyst that promotes the reduction of O2.
The first problem to be solved in the development of AG13 battery is the preparation of the cathode air diffusion electrode and the synthesis of a cost-effective oxygen reduction catalyst.
The Power Lithium Battery Engineering Laboratory of the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has successfully developed a 1000Wh magnesium-air battery prototype based on the optimization of the structure and preparation process of the cathode air diffusion electrode and the development of a high-performance manganese oxide oxygen reduction catalyst, as shown in Figure 1. The battery is composed of 5 single cells connected in series, with AZ31 magnesium alloy as the anode, 10% NaCl solution as the electrolyte, and the above-mentioned air diffusion electrode and manganese oxide catalyst as the cathode. The appearance size of the magnesium-air battery is 200×150×150mm3, the weight is 2.3kg, the energy density can reach 430Wh/kg, the maximum output power can reach 80W, and the I-V curve of its single cell is shown in Figure 2. The above-mentioned magnesium-air battery has good commercial prospects and can be used as field power supply, mobile power supply, backup power supply and emergency power supply, etc.
Based on the research of magnesium-air batteries, the R&D team is carrying out the research and development of aluminum-air batteries, and plans to develop a high-power-density power aluminum-air battery by solving the hydrogen evolution problem of aluminum-air batteries and developing high-power-density oxygen reduction catalysts. At present, the R&D team has applied for 6 invention patents and 1 utility model patent in the field of AG13 battery.
