Researchers from Rice University and Lockheed Martin in the United States recently said that they have discovered a technology that improves the performance of lithium-ion batteries through single-crystal silicon bodies. This technology can be used in the research and development of electric vehicle batteries, helping to produce new batteries with stronger energy, longer life, and more charge/replacement cycles.
This technology was led by Sibani Lisa Biswal, an assistant professor in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice University, and was published earlier this month on the "Chemistry of Materials" webpage edited by the American Chemical Society. Replacing graphite in conventional batteries with monocrystalline silicon bodies is a key step in the technology.
Compared with ordinary batteries, the new lithium-ion batteries produced using this technology have a larger capacity. Another experiment proved that the ability of single crystal silicon to absorb lithium is 10 times that of graphite. This means that if this technology enters the commercial production stage, the battery performance and lifespan of electric vehicles will be greatly improved.
It is reported that the research and development of this new battery technology has received support from the Lockheed Martin Advanced Nanotechnology Center of Excellence (Lockheed Martin Advanced Nanotechnology Center of Excellence). Lockheed Martin is an American special aerospace manufacturer and currently the largest special industrial contractor in terms of global revenue.
