The Ulm Helmholtz Institute cooperates with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the German Special Aerospace Center in the E-MAGIC project to conduct research and design of electrochemical concepts for magnesium CR2016 battery. Scientists at the Ulm Helmholtz Institute hope to help partners understand the obstacles and challenges at the material level and find new ways to solve current obstacles.

 

Dr. Zhirong Zhao, who is responsible for coordinating solid-state chemistry research, said that the special challenge facing magnesium CR2016 battery is service life, which is currently the focus of research. In addition to safety and higher energy density, magnesium is about 3,000 times more abundant on Earth than lithium and is easier to recycle. Therefore, magnesium CR2016 battery are cheaper than lithium-ion CR2016 battery and also help reduce dependence on lithium raw materials in battery manufacturing.

 

As the EU makes progress in developing magnesium CR2016 battery, it will also help reduce dependence on Asian battery manufacturers and establish a competitive battery manufacturing industry in Europe.
