The Helmholtz Institute in Ulm, Germany, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology are jointly developing magnesium-based energy storage technology. Magnesium batteries are a project under the EU's "Outlook 2020" scientific research plan (E-MAGIC). The EU has invested more than 6.5 million euros in this project, bringing together the expertise of 10 European scientific research institutions. Magnesium batteries have many advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries. According to Professor Maximili Fichtner, deputy director of the Helmholtz Institute in Ulm and leader of the project, magnesium is one of the important candidate materials for the post-lithium strategy. As an anode material, magnesium allows higher energy Density, magnesium batteries are more efficient, cheaper and safer than lithium-ion batteries for energy storage. "The widespread availability of magnesium batteries will play a decisive role in promoting the development of electric vehicles and distributed energy storage technology."
The Helmholtz Institute in Ulm collaborates with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the German Special Space Center on the E-MAGIC project to carry out research and design of electrochemical concepts for magnesium batteries. Helmholtz Institute scientists in Ulm want to help partners understand obstacles and challenges at the material level and find new ways to solve current obstacles.
Dr. Zhao Zhirong, who is responsible for coordinating solid-state chemistry research, said that the special challenge facing magnesium batteries is service life, which is currently a key issue that needs to be addressed. In addition to being safer and more energy dense, magnesium is about 3,000 times more abundant than lithium on Earth and is easier to recycle. Therefore, magnesium batteries are cheaper than lithium-ion batteries and also help reduce the dependence on lithium raw materials in battery manufacturing.
As the EU makes progress in developing magnesium batteries, it will also help reduce dependence on Asian battery manufacturers and establish a competitive battery manufacturing industry in Europe.
