The United States and Hong Kong, my country cooperate on a new cathode coating that can extend the life of CR2477 battery/improve safety

 

According to foreign media reports, the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory (DOEArgonneNationalLaboratory) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in my country have developed a granular cathode coating for CR2477 battery to extend the life of CR2477 battery and improve safety.

 

The research has been brewing for three years and was jointly developed by Argonne National Laboratory and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency and Vehicle Technology Office. Early experiments were conducted in Hong Kong because HKUST has ideal equipment to conduct research work according to laboratory specifications.

 

CR2477 battery are mainly used to power various devices such as electric vehicles, mobile phones, and computers, and cathode coating technology has been in use for more than 15 years. But it is not without limitations: the cathode coating is only a local coating that can only cover a small part of the outside of the cathode particles and cannot protect the cathode under high pressure or high temperature conditions.

 

Cathode researchers studied metal oxides made of nickel, manganese and cobalt. A cathode charged at high voltage will produce hydrogen, oxidize the electrolyte, and form unnecessary films on the cathode, resulting in energy loss. High temperatures accelerate such reactions, impairing the battery's electrochemical performance.

 

The new coating, made of a conductive polymer called polyethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT), completely protects every particle inside and outside the cathode from reacting with the electrolyte, marking a breakthrough in lithium battery technology. Argonne National Laboratory applied PEDOT using an oxidative chemical vapor deposition technique that uses gas to ensure that the coating is applied to every particle of the cathode, forming a strong outer skin.

 

Traditional coatings slow the diffusion of lithium into and out of cathode particles, resulting in poor electrical and ionic conductivity, reducing battery efficiency. In contrast, Argonne National Laboratory's new coating promotes the movement of lithium ions and electrons in and out of the cathode, thereby increasing battery energy.

 

CR2477 battery currently operate at 4.2V, and the new coating can increase the voltage to 4.6V. Although it is only a 15% improvement, it can significantly reduce the cost of the entire battery pack. Researchers say this can extend the range of electric vehicles, increase the life of mobile phone and laptop batteries, and ultimately change people's lifestyles.
