How to Distinguish Battery Model Sizes

release time:2025-07-19 Hits:     Popular:AG11 battery

Distinguishing battery model sizes involves understanding standardized naming conventions, physical dimensions, and application-specific codes, which vary by chemistry and use case. For cylindrical lithium-ion batteries, the most common format, the model number directly indicates size: the first two or three digits represent diameter in millimeters, followed by length in millimeters. For example, the 18650 model is 18mm in diameter and 65mm in length, while the 21700 is 21mm × 70mm. These numbers are critical for compatibility—using a 20700 cell in a device designed for 18650 will result in a poor fit and potential safety risks.

Prismatic and pouch batteries use different coding, often including voltage, capacity, and dimensions. A model like "LP503048" indicates a Li-polymer pouch cell with a thickness of 5mm, width of 30mm, and length of 48mm, with additional characters denoting capacity (e.g., "1000mAh"). Some manufacturers also include chemistry codes, such as "LFP" for lithium iron phosphate or "NCM" for nickel-cobalt-manganese, which affect performance but not size.

For consumer batteries (e.g., AA, AAA), international standards define size: AA batteries (LR6) are 14.5mm × 50.5mm, while AAA (LR03) are 10.5mm × 44.5mm. These are often labeled with both the letter code and dimensions to avoid confusion. Rechargeable versions (e.g., 14500 for AA-sized Li-ion) retain the same dimensions as disposable cells but have different chemistry.

EV and industrial batteries use custom sizes, with model numbers referencing application-specific requirements. For example, Tesla’s 4680 battery (46mm × 80mm) is larger than traditional 21700 cells, optimized for higher energy density in EVs. To identify these, cross-referencing manufacturer datasheets with physical measurements (diameter, length, weight) is essential, as model names may not follow universal standards.
