For example, batteries used in wireless earbuds may be as small as 30–50 mAh, while those in smartwatches range from 200–500 mAh, depending on the device’s features and screen size. Despite their small capacity, these batteries are optimized to deliver steady power to low-energy components such as OLED displays, heart rate sensors, and Bluetooth radios, enabling extended use—from several days for fitness trackers to 12–48 hours for feature-rich smartwatches.

  Energy efficiency is another key focus. Wearable batteries use advanced chemistries, such as lithium-polymer (a type of lithium-ion battery), which offer higher flexibility and lower weight compared to traditional cylindrical lithium-ion cells. Lithium-polymer batteries can be manufactured in thin, flat shapes, making them ideal for curved or slim wearable designs. They also have low self-discharge rates, meaning they retain their charge when not in use—an important feature for devices that may be stored for short periods between wears.

  Safety is paramount in wearable devices, which are in close contact with the user’s skin. Lithium-ion batteries for wearables include robust protection circuits to prevent overcharging, over-discharging, and short circuits. They are also encased in durable, heat-resistant materials to minimize the risk of leakage or thermal issues. Additionally, many wearables use low-voltage batteries (typically 3.7V) to further enhance safety.

  Charging convenience is another consideration. Wearable batteries often support wireless charging or magnetic charging, eliminating the need for bulky ports that could compromise the device’s water resistance—a key feature in many fitness-focused wearables. Some devices also use power-saving modes that reduce functionality (e.g., dimming the screen or disabling non-essential sensors) when the battery is low, extending usable life until the next charge.

  In summary, lithium-ion batteries for wearables are engineered to deliver efficient, reliable power in ultra-compact form factors, balancing size, capacity, safety, and charging convenience to support the growing range of features and applications in wearable technology.
