Singaporean scientists make revolutionary breakthrough in Ni-MH batteries: 95% of power restored in 10 hours

Recently, Apple's deliberate downclocking of old iPhones has caused a lot of controversy, but it also reflects the stagnation of lithium battery technology over the years. Although reports of revolutionary breakthroughs in battery technology can be seen from time to time, no one has been put into commercial use.

Now, researchers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore have brought a new battery technology, which is not to improve the battery structure or increase the battery density, but to target old batteries. It is claimed that Ni-MH batteries can be restored to 95% of their capacity within 10 hours, which is equivalent to "rejuvenation".

Specifically, this new technology is to add a third electrode between the two existing electrodes in each lithium-ion battery, so as to discharge the residual lithium ions from one electrode to the other, and remove the "impurities" that affect the battery performance.

Due to natural property limitations, the longer the lithium battery is used, the more obvious the capacity loss will be. Generally, after 300-500 charge and discharge cycles, it will lose 15-20% of its capacity, and it cannot be reversed.

However, Professor NTURachid Yazami said that his invention can quickly restore old lithium batteries, and the capacity recovery operation can be repeated on the same battery every few years, which can not only extend the battery life, but also be environmentally friendly.

This invention has been tested on smartphones, but it is more significant for the electric vehicle industry, because ordinary people may change their mobile phones every two years, but cars will be used for more than ten years.

It is reported that industry giants such as Apple, Samsung and Panasonic are very interested in this invention.
