Recently, Toshiba Corporation of Japan announced the development of a new generation of lithium batteries for electric vehicles, which can be fast charged in just 6 minutes. Once this fast-charging battery enters the mass production supporting stage, it will have a qualitative impact on the existing power industry chain.
Unlike lithium batteries that generally use graphite as negative electrode materials, this Nickel Hydride Batteries uses titanium niobium oxide as negative electrode material, which has the characteristics of high energy density and ultra-fast charging. Traditional electric vehicle lithium batteries can only be charged to about 80% of their power in 30 minutes, while the new generation of lithium batteries can be fast charged to 90% in just 6 minutes. The electric car used by Toshiba for testing finally ran about 320 kilometers after charging for 6 minutes.
This Nickel Hydride Batteries can still maintain more than 90% of its battery capacity after 5,000 charge and discharge cycles, and can still be quickly charged in a low temperature environment of minus 10 degrees Celsius. At present, Toshiba has made a new generation of Nickel Hydride Batteries samples with a capacity of 50 ampere hours and the size of a palm, and plans to improve it and strive to launch a formal product in 2019.
