What You Need to Know About Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) Batteries

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, a popular lithium-ion chemistry, stand out for their unique combination of safety, durability, and performance, making them suitable for diverse applications. One of their most celebrated features is enhanced safety. Unlike other lithium chemistries (such as lithium cobalt oxide), LiFePO4 batteries are highly resistant to thermal runaway—a dangerous reaction that can cause fires or explosions when batteries are overcharged, short-circuited, or exposed to high temperatures. LiFePO4 batteries contain no heavy metals like lead or cobalt, reducing environmental harm during production, use, and recycling. They also have a lower self-discharge rate (around 2-3% per month) compared to other lithium chemistries, ensuring they retain charge for longer periods when not in use. However, LiFePO4 batteries have a slightly lower energy density than some lithium-ion variants (e.g., NCM batteries), which means they are slightly heavier for the same energy storage. Despite this, their safety and durability make them indispensable in applications prioritizing reliability and longevity.
