Valve-regulated sealed lead-acid aa alkaline battery(hereinafter referred to as valve-regulated batteries) are widely used in practical applications due to their characteristics of saving investment, easy installation, safety, reliability, and ease of use. However, due to the lack of understanding of its usage requirements and the continued use of the old equalizing charging system, it has caused greater harm to the battery.
1. Reasons for canceling equalizing charging
(1) What is balanced charging?
The so-called balanced charging refers to charging that balances battery characteristics. It means that during the use of the battery, the battery terminal voltage is unbalanced due to individual differences, temperature differences, etc. of the battery. In order to avoid the worsening of this imbalance trend, it is necessary to improve the battery The charging voltage of the battery pack is used to activate and charge the battery.
(2) Reasons why balanced charging is not necessary
First of all, the concept of balanced charging was proposed in the use of old-fashioned lead-acid batteries. Most of the current valve-regulated aa alkaline batteryclearly state "voltage balance and complete formation." And "there is no acid layer formed in the battery, so there is no need for equalization charging." The definition of the charging voltage of a 2.4V single battery is accelerated charging, that is, "FASTCHARGE", not "EQUATION".
Secondly, equalizing charging can cause damage to valve-regulated batteries. The equalizing charge voltage is the higher float charge voltage for most batteries. At this time, most normal aa alkaline batteryare in an overcharged state. The gas that cannot be combined forms a certain pressure inside the battery. When the pressure exceeds the safety control valve threshold, the valve opens and the gas is discharged from the control valve.
In the previous battery maintenance, the process of equalizing charging was accompanied by adjustment of the specific gravity of the battery, which means adding distilled water to replenish the water volume to maintain the balance of the battery. However, in maintenance-free batteries, no water is added under the existing maintenance system. This will inevitably cause the battery to lose water and dry up.
How to ensure the consistency of battery terminal voltage after canceling equalization charging
(1) The decisive factor of battery terminal voltage
First of all, it mainly depends on the concentration of electrolyte and plate material. When the battery loses water, the electrolyte concentration will inevitably increase, causing the battery's terminal voltage to increase. Secondly, it is related to the opening of the safety valve. If the pressure of the safety valve is too low, the battery will lose water prematurely and the terminal voltage will rise. In addition, the connection status between series-connected aa alkaline batteryis different, and insufficient charging will occur during float charging. When the battery encounters deep discharge and then undergoes restorative charging, it is difficult to recover, which will cause the battery terminal voltage to be low.
(2) Means of ensuring battery terminal voltage
Since the battery terminal voltage will be inconsistent and the battery is not allowed to be balanced, how to ensure the consistency of the battery terminal voltage? First of all, the consistency of battery voltage should be ensured from the raw materials and production processes of the battery. For example, the selection of battery materials, especially the selection of key materials such as electrolyte, plates, and pressure control valves. Secondly, we must ensure the quality of battery installation and ensure the consistency of battery installation status. For example, battery connection method, torque balance, etc. In addition, attention should be paid to maintenance.
