  Digital power management circuitry with backward-compatible analog control

  Recent developments in VLSI technology have broadened the scope of digital control applications, especially in power electronic components. Digital control ICs offer several advantages, such as smaller die size, fewer passive components, and lower cost. In addition, digital control can utilize the power management bus (PMBus) to complete system configuration; advanced control algorithms can improve performance; and programmability can enable application optimization. As digital power management becomes more prevalent and replaces a large number of analog controllers, it must maintain backward compatibility of existing functionality so that both digital and analog power modules can work in the same system.

  Output voltage scaling is typically used in analog power modules so that the end user can change the output voltage of the power module through an external resistor. Its enhanced flexibility allows a selection of standard modules to be used in virtually any application, regardless of voltage requirements. Figure 1 shows a typical configuration for adjusting the output voltage in the AGF600-48S30 analog power module.

  The output voltage can be adjusted by changing the resistor connected to the positive output terminal or ground of the power module. The output voltage can be adjusted upward (above the nominal output voltage) by connecting an external resistor RUP and leaving RDOWN floating, or by connecting an external resistor RDOWN and Short circuit RUP (resistance value is zero) and adjust downward (below nominal output voltage).
