Safety Standards and Specifications for Lithium Batteries

source:Industry News release time:2025-09-27 Hits:     Popular:AG11 battery

Lithium batteries are subject to rigorous safety standards and specifications to mitigate risks of fire, explosion, or chemical leakage, ensuring safe production, transportation, and use. These standards vary by region but share core objectives: preventing thermal runaway, ensuring mechanical stability, and regulating electrical performance.

Internationally, the UN38.3 standard governs the transportation of lithium batteries, requiring tests for altitude simulation, temperature cycling, vibration, and short circuits to ensure they withstand harsh logistics conditions. For consumer electronics, the IEC 62133 standard specifies safety requirements for cells and batteries, covering overcharge, overdischarge, and thermal abuse testing.

In automotive applications, ISO 26262 (functional safety) and IEC 62133-2 (specific to EV batteries) are critical. These standards mandate tests for mechanical integrity (crush, impact, puncture) and thermal management, ensuring batteries resist damage in collisions. The UL 1642 standard focuses on cell-level safety, evaluating resistance to fire and overheating, while UL 2580 applies to battery packs, testing for electrical and thermal performance in vehicles.

Regional regulations add further layers. The EUs REACH and RoHS restrict hazardous substances like lead and cadmium, while Chinas GB 38031 sets strict requirements for EV battery safety, including thermal propagation preventionensuring a single cell failure does not trigger a chain reaction.

Manufacturers must also adhere to production standards, such as ISO 9001, to ensure consistent quality. Compliance with these standards involves rigorous testing: cells are exposed to extreme temperatures, overcharging, and physical stress to verify they remain stable. By aligning with these specifications, stakeholders minimize risks, protect users, and facilitate global trade of lithium batteries.
