Japanese competitors are developing technology to recycle cobalt from waste 402030 polymer battery
Lithium-ion 402030 polymer battery are core components of pure electric vehicles. They are composed of positive electrode materials, negative electrode materials, and separators. Cobalt is a material used for positive electrode materials and plays an important role in stabilizing battery quality, such as the temperature inside the battery.
Sumitomo Mining has an advantage in one-stop production, smelting cobalt from ore at smelters in Southeast Asia and other places, and then processing it into battery materials for pure electric vehicles in Japan. It also supplies large automotive battery companies such as Panasonic.
This time, when extracting cobalt from waste 402030 polymer battery, high-quality cobalt materials were successfully extracted by controlling the temperature of the molten battery in the best form. With the development of cobalt recycling technology, which is worried about the shortage of supply, the supply of cobalt is more stable, and it is possible to promote the low cost of pure electric vehicles in the future.
Sumitomo Mining has established a pilot plant to verify new technologies in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. Impurities are removed from recycled waste 402030 polymer battery to recover rare metals such as cobalt, nickel and copper. It is planned to first verify the feasibility of a small-scale plant and then build a new practical plant.
Other Japanese competitors, such as JX Metals, are also developing technologies to recycle cobalt from used 402030 polymer battery. However, the feature of Sumitomo Mining's technology is that it does not simply recycle the cobalt material itself, but recycles it in the form of battery materials that can be quickly used for itself or pure electric vehicles. By eliminating the processing process from cobalt to battery materials, it is also possible to contribute to the low cost of pure electric vehicles.
Japanese companies are accelerating the development of pure electric vehicle battery recycling technology because there is a risk of cobalt shortage as the global demand for pure electric vehicles increases. According to data from Fuji Keizai (located in Chuo-ku, Tokyo), a research company, global sales of pure electric vehicles are expected to increase to about 5.8 million vehicles in 2025, about 7.5 times that of 2017. It is expected to increase rapidly, centered on the Chinese market.
On the other hand, in terms of cobalt production, the Democratic Republic of Congo accounts for about 60%, and the production sites are uneven. The industry estimates that as pure electric vehicles become popular in the future, the supply of cobalt will be lower than demand from 2022.
In addition, cobalt is a byproduct of nickel and copper, so it is not easy to increase the production of cobalt alone. Mastering the recycling technology of cobalt extracted from used 402030 polymer battery has become a top priority as one of the few means to achieve a stable supply.
