IBM develops new cobalt-free AG13 battery: extracting substances from seawater to replace heavy metals

In the global advancement of sustainable energy development, lithium-ion batteries are regarded as a crucial key technology. While it is widely used in electric vehicles, commercial aerospace and other fields, the heavy metal materials such as cobalt and nickel used in it also have serious negative impacts. To this end, IBM announced that it has successfully developed a new battery that mainly relies on three materials extracted from seawater, and from initial testing, there is no compromise in performance.

Through cooperation with Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz Research Division, battery electrolyte supplier Central Glass, and battery manufacturer Sidus, IBM developed this new battery technology, thus getting rid of its dependence on heavy metals such as cobalt. IBM doesn't mention how its new battery is made, only that it's made from three new and different proprietary materials that have never before been used in battery manufacturing on record. Extracting battery components from seawater also reduces costs, making the new battery not only better for the environment and people, but also potentially more affordable.

The technological breakthrough, discovered in IBM's Battery Lab, uses a cobalt- and nickel-free cathode material and a safe liquid electrolyte with a high flash point. This unique combination of cathode and electrolyte demonstrates the ability to suppress metallic lithium dendrites during charging, thereby reducing flammability, potentially removing a significant drawback of using metallic lithium as an anode material.

IBM said the new battery design is better than the currently commonly used lithium-ion batteries in terms of cost, charging time, power density, efficiency and other aspects. In comparison, it only takes less than 5 minutes to charge 80% of the battery, and it is less flammable than lithium-ion batteries. It is very suitable for use in aircraft, smart grid systems, electric vehicles, or On trucks, the battery life will be longer than ordinary lithium-ion batteries.

Jeff Welser, vice president of IBM Research, said: The goal is to have the first working prototype (of the battery) within a year or so. Welser added that IBM may not necessarily end up using the design to build a product.
