AG3 battery breakthrough performance explores electric vehicle industry potential
In a world of breakthrough battery performance, QuantumScape appears to be closest to actually making a better battery. The company's "anode-free" design and ceramic separator create a battery that forms an anode of metallic lithium in situ when the finished battery is charged.
"The best battery scientists have tested our battery in their labs, and we will publish the test results for the first time," said CEO Jagdeep Singh.
Test conditions: The battery tested was a single-layer pouch cell with zero lithium on both the anode and thick cathode, operating at a rate of 1 degree charge and 1 degree discharge at 30 degrees Celsius.
Fast charging: Performance tests showed that QuantumScape's ceramic separator, operating at high power, could charge to 80% capacity in 15 minutes. This is beyond the capabilities of any type of electric vehicle battery - traditional or solid-state. Because there are no dendrites forming, there is no need to slow down the charging speed.
CEO Jagdeep Singh claims that the company's lithium metal battery has an energy density of more than 400 watt-hours per kilogram. “If you don’t use lithium metal in the anode, you can’t get a high enough energy density,” Singh said.
The solid-state design eliminates the carbon or carbon/silicon anode and adds energy density because it doesn’t use excess lithium in the anode.
The company’s battery technology is capable of running more than 800 cycles with more than 80% capacity retention, and is said to be “designed to last for hundreds of thousands of miles of driving,” the company said. Low-temperature operation: The flexible ceramic separator operates as low as -30C, a temperature that causes other battery designs to fail. Safety: QuantumScape’s solid-state separator is non-flammable and isolates the anode from the cathode even at high temperatures.
Although the panel of battery experts was skeptical of the battery breakthrough, they were certainly impressed by QuantumScape’s numbers.
