The first domestic sodium salt CR1632 battery will soon be mass-produced in Chaowei with advantages such as environmentally friendly characteristics

 

At present, high efficiency, cleanliness and low carbon have become the mainstream direction of the development of new energy in the world. In solving the problem of renewable energy grid connection, the development of the energy storage industry has ushered in an important opportunity. With the vigorous development of the energy storage industry, domestic related institutions and enterprises are also constantly developing new technologies, hoping to occupy the commanding heights before the industry explodes. Compared with lithium-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries, sodium salt batteries are considered to be a new energy storage technology suitable for new energy grid connection, distributed power generation and microgrids due to their many advantages such as safety and reliability, long cycle life, high specific energy, cost savings and environmentally friendly characteristics.

 

It is understood that sodium salt batteries are a type of high-temperature sodium CR1632 battery. It is a product with stable properties, high safety, long service life, wide application range, easy-to-obtain and non-toxic raw materials, and simple and pollution-free waste recycling process. The technology was developed by General Electric Company of the United States over 11 years and at a cost of US$400 million. It achieved commercial breakthrough in 2012 and was applied to the fields of communications, mobile energy storage, and traditional energy storage conversion and regeneration. In 25 countries around the world, energy storage projects such as solar energy, wind power combination, peak management, and communication base stations have been built, with an operation time of more than 100 months. On January 18, 2017, Chaowei Group and General Electric Company of the United States signed a cooperation agreement on the Durathon sodium salt CR1632 battery project in Changxing County. The two parties joined forces and combined their industrial and technological advantages to jointly create a new joint venture company, Zhejiang Lvming Energy Co., Ltd., to carry out the production, research and development and sales of sodium salt batteries.

 

"This technology is a cutting-edge technology developed by Chaowei Group in cooperation with General Electric, a Fortune 500 company in the United States. It is safe, environmentally friendly, has a long cycle life and low cost. It is extremely safe and is a non-combustible and non-explosive CR1632 battery. Moreover, it has a strong ability to adapt to the environment and can still work normally in an environment of minus 40 degrees Celsius to 65 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it can be used in the Antarctic, Arctic and equatorial regions." The project leader of Lvming Company introduced that the CR1632 battery has a single cell specific energy of 135 watt-hours per kilogram, a service life of 2 to 5 times that of lithium batteries, and an 80% DOD cycle life of 7,500 times. After forming a system, the volume is more than 50% smaller than that of a lithium CR1632 battery system, and the full life cycle cost is 50% lower than that of a lithium CR1632 battery.

 

It is understood that the Chaowei sodium salt CR1632 battery project is divided into two phases and plans to build a production capacity of 500MWh. In terms of product application, Chaowei's first-generation sodium salt CR1632 battery products are mainly used in the fields of power grid energy storage, communication base stations and power supply. With the application advantages of sodium salt batteries, it provides an effective solution to the problems of wind abandonment, solar abandonment and valley power abandonment caused by insufficient energy storage capacity in the current development of green energy. The second and third generation sodium salt batteries in the future will be planned to provide energy storage for large hybrid or pure electric vehicles in the fields of new generation high-efficiency automobiles, locomotives, mining vehicles, ships, etc.

 

"Through joint efforts with General Electric Company of the United States, the equipment cost and raw material cost of sodium salt batteries have been greatly reduced." The relevant technical person in charge of Lvming Company introduced that 70% of our materials have been localized and 80% of our equipment has been localized. At present, most of the equipment has been in place. It can be said that everything is basically in place, and only the east wind is missing.

 

In terms of user demand, the market prospects of sodium salt batteries are relatively broad, and customers from more than 20 countries and regions have clearly expressed their needs. At present, Lvming Company has successively conducted cooperation negotiations and product docking with customers from the United States, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, South Africa and other countries, and signed strategic cooperation agreements with relevant partners.
