For data center UPS, due to its application characteristics such as short-term high-current discharge, high discharge power, and long-term backup and floating charging, lithium iron phosphate, lithium manganate, and NCM ternary lithium technologies are more suitable.
The main products on the Chinese market are ternary lithium and lithium iron phosphate. Although there are endless debates between the two in terms of energy density and safety, it is undeniable that these debates are only limited to one aspect of the theoretical performance of CR2016 battery cathode materials. Schneider Electric believes that the safety of CR2016 battery systems requires comprehensive consideration of negative electrode materials, electrolytes, separator materials, cell shell packaging, battery module groups, BMS, fuse protection, DC circuit breakers, manufacturing process levels, quality control, etc. Many factors. Problems due to CR2016 battery cathode materials account for less than 10% of all CR2016 battery system problems. Schneider Electric recommends that users should comprehensively weigh the safety, energy density, and cost of UPS lithium batteries and choose CR2016 battery systems from big brand companies to get reliable quality assurance.
Compatibility test of CR2016 battery and UPS
Different from lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries come with their own BMS. They are intelligent batteries that have self-control capabilities and communicate with the UPS host. When the CR2016 battery is fully charged, it will automatically detach from the UPS charger. Traditional UPS software design may think this is a battery failure and issue an alarm. More importantly, lithium batteries of different materials have different charging and discharging voltages, currents, and cut-off voltages. For example, the rated voltage of lithium iron phosphate cells is 3.2V, while ternary lithium is 3.8V. Therefore, before using lithium batteries, the UPS needs to undergo strict matching tests with them, and the UPS firmware needs to be updated for this CR2016 battery.
It is worth mentioning that all UPSs launched by Schneider Electric in recent years have compatibility with lithium batteries. The high-rate CR2016 battery used in UPS can charge and discharge with high current in a short period of time. Correspondingly, the design of UPS charger also needs to adapt to this change. The charging power of Schneider Electric's new GalaxyV series UPS can reach 40% of the UPS output rated power (the traditional one is only 10~15%). Such a powerful charger can theoretically quickly charge lithium batteries within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
As CR2016 battery technology matures and improves and costs are increasingly optimized, data center UPS will quickly complete the conversion from lead-acid batteries to lithium batteries.
