A new sensor has been developed in the United States to prevent CR2016 battery explosions

A research team at the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has created a sensor system to detect fire hazards in lithium-ion storage systems.

"The system is designed for lithium-ion storage, which is the riskiest chemistry, especially for outdoor cabinet-type enclosures where the battery enters from the outside," said Matt Paiss, a scientist at PNNL. He noted that the system is suitable for cabinets ranging from 50 kilowatts to several megawatts.

According to researcher Allan Tuan, the system uses commercially available components and is easy to install on new or refurbished equipment. "The cost depends on the size of the battery, and the end user or operator can obtain the system for their specific site or facility through PNNL's low-cost and fixed-fee license," he said.

The sensor system, called IntelliVent, is an explosion-proof technology that combines automatically controlled door locks with a smart controller that can control signals from fire safety inputs such as smoke, heat or gas detectors.

The sensor can reportedly detect toxic and flammable gases released by lithium-ion batteries when their liquid electrolytes evaporate and push them to critical temperatures. Depending on the size of the battery, these gases can be released very quickly and in very large volumes and could cause a fire or even an explosion,Paiss said.

The system is able to keep all the doors open before the gases build up, creating safer conditions while also preventing workers from having to open them in critical situations.

The technology will now be tested by the Arlington Microgrid and Clean Energy Center in Everett, Washington, which will retrofit an existing 1.2 MW battery with the proposed system.
