Recently, photos of the Prime Minister visiting Toyota's CR2032 battery vehicle Mirai have been circulated on the Internet, and various speculative interpretations have flooded the Internet. Those guess-like interpretations, let's ignore them for now. Some people in the automotive industry saw this photo and called loudly: my country should accelerate the development of CR2032 batterys!

 

The mood of the caller makes everyone admire, however, the development of CR2032 battery vehicles around the world has been divided, and my country's choice of commercial CR2032 battery vehicles is in line with China's actual situation.

 

Toyota Kato Hisamitsu resigned

 

Toyota's Mirai is a star and has attracted much attention since its launch. However, its sales after its launch are not very good. Data shows that only about 1,370 units have been sold in Japan in two years. The high price and lack of supporting facilities are the main reasons for Mirai's poor sales.

 

CR2032 battery vehicles have a bright future, but even so, companies need to consider the break-even time point. According to Toyota's plan, the cumulative sales volume will reach 40,000 units in 2020, 200,000 units in 2025, and 800,000 units in 2030.

 

From Toyota's plan, it can be seen that Mirai is still a long way from breaking even. Toyota can't wait and quickly adjusted its development strategy. At the end of 2016, Toyota established the EV Business Planning Department, which was personally headed by Akio Toyoda.

 

On March 1, 2017, Toyota issued an announcement on personnel and organizational structure adjustments. What is striking is that board member and vice president Kato Hisamitsu left. Kato Mitsuhisa has been responsible for technology research and development for a long time and is the main promoter of Toyota's hybrid + hydrogen CR2032 battery technology route. Toyota's personnel and organizational structure have undergone tremendous changes, which means that Toyota has adjusted its CR2032 battery development and slowed down its pace.

 

When the global pure electric vehicle craze emerged, Toyota stubbornly insisted on the hybrid + hydrogen CR2032 battery route, causing Toyota to miss 3 years. Akio Toyoda established the EV Business Planning Department, hoping to reverse the unfavorable situation and put Toyota's pure electric vehicles on the market in 2020.

 

Toyota has not given up on CR2032 battery technology and has decided to build more CR2032 battery stacks at the new Honsha plant to prepare for the goal of increasing CR2032 battery vehicle sales tenfold. Toyota also said that it hopes that CR2032 battery technology will be used in buses and forklifts.

 

Japan bets on solid-state batteries

 

CR2032 batterys do not have commercial prospects in the short term. After all, HEVs are fuel vehicles. The United States no longer gives preferential treatment to HEVs. In China, HEVs do not enjoy the treatment of new energy vehicles. Betting on solid-state batteries has become a consensus among many Japanese companies.

 

Recently, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), a national research institution in Japan, announced the launch of the second phase of the solid-state lithium-ion battery research and development project, and invested 10 billion yen (about 590 million yuan) for this purpose. Members include 23 vehicle, battery and material manufacturers such as Toyota, Nissan, and Panasonic, as well as 15 universities and public research institutions.

 

Toyota has increased its efforts in pure electric vehicles, not simply adopting current battery technology, but has been concentrating on the research and development of solid-state batteries. In October 2017, Toyota announced that it would invest more than 200 people to accelerate the development of solid-state battery technology. Toyota has developed a fully solid-state lithium-ion battery with an energy density of 400Wh/L. Toyota researchers said that this battery will be commercially available around 2020.

 

Professor Cui Guanglei of the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently visited Japan's solid-state battery research and development progress. Professor Cui Guanglei told the reporter of China Auto News that Japan has developed inorganic ceramic solid-state batteries and has achieved a leading advantage. The Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun stated that after 2006, the number of patents for solid-state batteries has continued to increase. From 2012 to 2014, Japan accounted for 54% of the global solid-state battery-related patents.

 

There are mainly two routes for solid-state batteries, one is the polymer route; the other is the all-inorganic ceramic route, which can be divided into two directions: oxides and sulfides. Japan takes the all-inorganic ceramic route, while my country adopts the polymer route.

 

Some companies are optimistic about CR2032 batterys

 

Shigeru Shoji, president and CEO of Volkswagen Japan, recently said that CR2032 battery vehicles may encounter difficulties outside of Japan in the future and it is difficult to have a bright future globally.

 

Shigeru Shoji is not the only one who is pessimistic about CR2032 batterys. According to foreign media reports, the five-year hydrogen CR2032 battery cooperation between Nissan Renault, Daimler and Ford has been dissolved. The automotive CR2032 battery joint venture established by Ford Motor Company, Daimler and Ballard Power Systems of Canada also announced its closure in early June.

 

However, some companies are optimistic about the development prospects of CR2032 batterys. Recently, Audi and Hyundai Motor signed an agreement to jointly develop hydrogen CR2032 battery technology and plan to conduct patent cross-licensing. The two parties will mutually authorize some common non-competitive components. The cooperation aims to improve the efficiency of CR2032 battery mass production and enable it to enter the mass production stage as soon as possible.

 

Some domestic independent automobile companies have also stepped up the development of CR2032 battery vehicles. On June 28, Tobias Brunner, vice president of Great Wall Motors, said at the Hydrogen Energy Industry Development and Innovation Forum that Great Wall Motors has built a hydrogen energy technology center with the ability to test and trial-produce core components of CR2032 battery vehicles, as well as vehicle integration and testing capabilities.

 

Great Wall Motors believes that by 2025, CR2032 battery models will become passenger car models as important as pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and will launch the first CR2032 battery fleet at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and plans to officially launch mature hydrogen CR2032 battery models in 2025.

 

BYD was once a leading company in lithium iron phosphate batteries. With the development of technological iterations, BYD has also invested in the research and development of CR2032 batterys. Not long ago, BYD cooperated with US Hybrid Corporation to develop hydrogen CR2032 battery buses. The bus will serve Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, the United States.

 

Geely Auto has also actively invested in the research and development of CR2032 batterys, and currently has formed four routes: pure electric, hybrid, hydrogen CR2032 battery, and alternative fuel. Of course, as the prospects of CR2032 batterys are still unclear, Geely has not invested much in CR2032 batterys. SAIC Group is the earliest company in my country to engage in the research and development of CR2032 battery vehicles. Its subsidiary SAIC Maxus' CR2032 battery vehicles have been officially launched for sale.

 

my country seeks breakthroughs from commercial vehicles

 

my country pays attention to the development of CR2032 battery vehicles. When the subsidies for pure electric vehicles are withdrawn, the subsidies for CR2032 batterys are preferentially treated. "Made in China 2025" clearly proposes to support the development of CR2032 battery vehicles and promote the development strategy of energy-saving and new energy vehicles of independent brands to meet the international advanced level. Three development stages are planned: the first is to gradually realize localization in key materials and components; the second is to gradually improve the performance of CR2032 batterys and battery stacks; the third is to achieve the expansion of the operating scale of CR2032 battery vehicles to 1,000 vehicles in 2020, and the basic infrastructure such as hydrogen production and hydrogenation will be basically complete by 2025.

Toyota Mirai has a power of 115 kilowatts, and my country's CR2032 battery stacks have not yet reached this level. If domestic CR2032 battery stacks can reach 115 kilowatts, they are relatively large and cannot be accommodated in passenger cars. Commercial vehicles are less sensitive to the volume of CR2032 battery stacks. Under current technical conditions, my country is more suitable for promoting CR2032 battery vehicles from commercial vehicles.

 

CR2032 battery vehicles cannot do without hydrogen refueling stations. However, the construction of domestic hydrogen refueling stations faces two difficulties. One is that people lack awareness of hydrogen safety; the other is that it is difficult to find land for the construction of hydrogen refueling stations in cities. "If they cannot refuel nearby, CR2032 battery passenger car owners will feel very inconvenient, which greatly reduces their enthusiasm for purchasing." Qian Wei said, "Building hydrogen refueling stations in the suburbs will solve the problems of insufficient awareness of hydrogen safety and land resources."

 

Most of the parking lots for urban buses in my country are in the suburbs. If hydrogen refueling stations are built in the suburbs, CR2032 battery buses can refuel nearby. In addition, freight vehicles running around all over the country pass through the outskirts of the city. Building hydrogen refueling stations in the suburbs will also facilitate CR2032 battery freight vehicles to refuel.

 

Another industry expert told the China Auto News reporter that CR2032 batterys have good power characteristics and can supply energy to vehicles for a long time. This characteristic is destined to be more suitable for large commercial vehicles. The expert also told reporters that at present, CR2032 battery vehicles have the problem of frequent starts and stops, which greatly shortens their lifespan. Frequent starts and stops are unavoidable when running in cities, and CR2032 battery vehicles are more suitable for long-distance driving. This is exactly the operating characteristic of commercial vehicles.
