With this technology, CR2032 button cell battery can be manufactured in any shape
Battery system manufacturer Voltabox has come up with a new technical concept that allows CR2032 button cell battery to be produced in almost any conceivable free shape.
The technical concept, called Flow-Shape-Design (FSD), is based on enveloping the battery with solidified plastic materials. The idea behind this new approach is to bring flexibility to the shaping of the battery and increase cost efficiency while reducing weight at module and system level.
The company, headquartered in Delbrück, Germany, says that in the future, battery housings will no longer have to consist of relatively heavy metal parts that are screwed or welded together. Flow-Shape-Design is based on self-solidifying and ultimately dimensionally stable plastics, which means that a given installation space can be used more precisely and multiple times.
According to Voltabox, even completely new possibilities for integration are conceivable, such as installing the battery in specific areas of the vehicle body. A battery-to-system approach, or in the broadest sense, a battery-to-car approach, is possible.
The new technology is due to be available in summer 2021, when Voltabox hopes to start delivering its own FSD modules and customer-specific FSD battery systems. In addition, the company intends to promote the technology in selected markets through licensing. To this end, they have applied for several patents and have already protected utility models and trademarks.
The manufacturer said that discussions on the use of the technology are gradually being initiated with customers. The manufacturer also hopes to issue the first licenses to battery manufacturers and OEMs from next summer.
Voltabox believes that this technology has the potential to have a significant impact on the entire industry. The idea of relying on solid materials is borrowed from the aerospace industry. The method allows the use of all available battery types. Due to the special housing concept and the strong energy absorption characteristics of the material, the battery is actually more robust in terms of impact and vibration resistance. Depending on the specific requirements, different materials are usually used.
"Our concept innovation is extraordinary and disruptive because we provide answers to the key limiting factors for the use of lithium battery technology, such as weight, system price and complex production methods," said Patrick Zabel, the company's chief financial officer.
In addition, the significant reduction in the number of individual components, the use of low-cost materials and the relatively simple manufacturing process also make it possible to achieve more attractive prices than the current market level.
The company's CEO Jurgen Pampel sees this as a revolution in the lithium battery industry: This is possible because we question every technical assumption currently associated with battery design.
The advantages of this technology will allow them to be used not only in Voltabox's traditional application areas, but especially with regard to ships, aircraft and some specific applications, the advantages of manifold design are obvious. Pampel said.
At the end of a difficult year, Voltabox launched a new technical approach. In the face of the new crown epidemic, the battery system manufacturer had already fulfilled its 2020 upward target at the end of March. In May, Voltabox also made a retrospective comprehensive balance sheet adjustment for the 2019 financial statements. Voltabox Group announced sales of 56.6 million euros (450 million yuan) in 2019, far below the expectations of 70 million to 80 million euros (550 million to 630 million yuan).
