Development trend of CR2430 battery technology

 

Based on their different appearances, the three types of CR2430 battery designs also have their own characteristics. The three can affect the energy density, safety and weight of the single CR2430 battery through the shell materials and internal design. Let's take cake as an example. The filling represents the energy density of the single CR2430 battery, and the flour represents the shell packaging material selection.

 

Stainless steel shells have always been the main packaging material for cylindrical and square batteries. Due to different process standards, lighter aluminum shells have been rapidly promoted on square batteries, which also has an advantage in weight. And soft-pack batteries, because of the pursuit of thinner processes, use aluminum-plastic film packaging that is lighter than aluminum shells. It is so thin that you can even feel the flow of liquid batteries inside with your hands.

 

In addition to directly affecting the weight of single batteries, the different shell materials also have an impact on CR2430 battery safety, heat generation and other aspects. After all, the single batteries will eventually be packaged into groups and placed in the car. Steel shell is the hardest and heaviest, and it needs to take into account the safety process difficulty and is relatively low, while aluminum film shell is the softest and lightest. When manufacturing monomers and packaging them into groups, it also requires higher heat dissipation and collision safety. Square batteries will have the same advantages and disadvantages depending on the choice of shell materials.

 

Don't underestimate the weight of single batteries, which will have multiple impacts on the final packaging and grouping into the car. Lighter CR2430 battery packs can make the overall vehicle weight lower, thus providing more layout methods for car companies. With the advancement of technology, the lighter the single CR2430 battery, the more space there is to take into account energy density. For example, when designing a vehicle, it is limited to loading only a set of 300 kg CR2430 battery packs. Obviously, the lighter the single CR2430 battery, the higher the energy of the entire CR2430 battery pack.

 

For cylindrical and square batteries with steel shells, the solution for controlling the weight when installed on the body is relatively simple. For example, the current mainstream new energy vehicles that use cylindrical CR2430 battery packs have the CR2430 battery packs directly under the body, so that even if they are heavier, they will not affect the front and rear weight distribution of the whole vehicle, but they will affect the ground clearance of the vehicle and the height of the platform in the car. Some plug-in hybrid vehicles place cylindrical CR2430 battery packs under the trunk and balance the weight of the vehicle by matching them with the weight of the engine at the front of the vehicle, but the result is that the trunk space becomes very small.

 

The three types of batteries have different advantages and disadvantages in terms of safety and heat dissipation of packaging groups due to different CR2430 battery shapes. Although cylindrical batteries are heavy and have low energy density, they form a good heat dissipation space between cylinders when packaging. Square batteries are different. If they are tightly arranged together without leaving gaps, in addition to heat dissipation, the safety between monomers is also difficult to guarantee. The packaging of soft-pack batteries will be more complicated. To ensure safety, heat dissipation, and not lose the advantage of the thin volume of the soft pack itself, you can imagine how complicated the packaging group link is. Many car companies will carefully consider the cost investment of the three types of CR2430 battery designs in the packaging link. At present, cylindrical batteries with lower process difficulty and cost are a good choice at this stage.

 

Comment: Simply put, if square batteries have the same industry standards as cylindrical batteries, then the advantages and disadvantages of the two in application are basically on the same level. However, soft-pack batteries have stronger design flexibility and have more obvious advantages such as low weight and high energy density. In the future, they will become the preferred CR2430 battery type for more car companies. But on the contrary, the requirements for manufacturing processes are also significantly higher than the first two. The additional costs and technical requirements in production and packaging have increased the terminal price of new energy vehicles in disguise. Therefore, the extreme advantages and disadvantages of soft-pack batteries have also discouraged some car companies, and the proportion of new energy models using soft-pack batteries is also the lowest. To put it bluntly, in the face of cost, more companies still choose to compromise with the other two.

 

In addition, the type of single CR2430 battery is only one of the angles for car companies to choose the direction of research and development, and packaging technology is also a particularly critical link. At present, first-line new energy car companies have their own CR2430 battery laboratories. They conduct secondary research and development based on the CR2430 battery prototypes provided by suppliers, and finally push the research plan back to suppliers, and the two work together to finalize the required CR2430 battery plan. Then the packaging work is completed by themselves or suppliers, and the last step is to complete the installation after a careful weight layout. There are trade-offs in all links of the process, which is also the key to reversely inferring which type of CR2430 battery the car companies will choose.

 

Closer or even overtake, win-win cooperation between Chinese CR2430 battery companies and car companies

 

From single batteries to vehicle applications, car companies and CR2430 battery companies have a close cooperative relationship. For example, in the application of cylindrical batteries, Panasonic and Tesla have maintained a technical alliance for many years, and General Motors of the United States has also reached a technical consensus with LG Chem on soft-pack CR2430 battery technology. Prior to this, Samsung SDI also had a lot of technical cooperation with BMW on square batteries.

 

CR2430 battery suppliers determine the reliable basic CR2430 battery process, and the secondary research and development of car companies determines the performance of the CR2430 battery application in the vehicle on the three major issues of endurance, weight and safety. The core technologies of the three types of batteries were once mastered by Japanese and Korean companies for a long time, and they have become the preferred CR2430 battery suppliers for new energy car companies before. In the past two years, compared with foreign countries, Chinese batteries and new energy car companies have not only greatly narrowed the gap in CR2430 battery technology and application, but also have more say in production capacity, quality control and actual application performance. It has become normal for foreign car companies to choose Chinese CR2430 battery companies as their preferred suppliers.

 

By 2018, Chinese CR2430 battery companies have acquired comprehensive technical capabilities for manufacturing cylindrical, square and soft-pack batteries, and have made substantial progress in the single-cell energy density of the three types of batteries. In recent years, Chinese CR2430 battery companies have also transitioned from cylindrical and square batteries to soft-pack CR2430 battery technology. Several companies, led by CATL, Lishen and Guoxuan High-tech, are choosing to adopt the soft-pack CR2430 battery technology route.

 

At the same time, as the domestic new energy vehicle subsidy standards have put forward higher requirements for CR2430 battery energy density, soft-pack technology has become an important means for batteries to achieve lightweight and high density. At the beginning of this year, CATL, Lishen and Guoxuan High-tech, three companies undertaking new lithium-ion power CR2430 battery projects, all chose the soft-pack CR2430 battery technology route, and the single-cell energy density reached 300Wh/kg. However, its requirements for high manufacturing processes also require the improvement of related aftermarket technologies, such as the process and production capacity of the outer packaging aluminum-plastic film, and high-precision lamination, electrolyte injection and packaging equipment technology.

 

However, there are still many practical problems on the technical road to soft-pack batteries. First of all, the cost of aluminum-plastic film technology is high and the domestic technology level is limited, especially in the control of lamination technology and process, which requires higher requirements than winding. Quality control problems will directly affect CR2430 battery life and safety issues. To maintain the simultaneous growth of production capacity and quality control, the concerted efforts of CR2430 battery companies and car companies are more critical.

 

Before the outbreak of new energy, it is possible to become a trend

 

A few years ago, the power batteries of China's new energy vehicles were mainly lithium iron phosphate square batteries, because at that time, Chinese companies' own cylindrical CR2430 battery technology and cost control capabilities were not outstanding compared with overseas. From the perspective of car companies, customizable square batteries are more conducive to the rapid development and design of new energy models. Now, in order to achieve results faster, CR2430 battery and automobile companies used square batteries as transitional technologies, and now cylindrical ternary lithium batteries have become the new mainstream.

 

But this does not mean who will become the final technical representative. Cylindrical, square and soft-pack batteries currently have their own unique value to the market, and who can become a new trend will also be affected by the speed of vehicle development. For us, whether their respective advantages can be maximized by car companies in terms of product strength is the real issue that deserves our attention. White cats or black cats, any cat that can catch mice is a good cat, and soft-pack cylindrical batteries that can run far are good batteries.
