  1. The birth time and principle of lithium batteries

  In 1991, Sony launched the first commercial CR2450 battery. Lithium batteries are still used today and are known as the mainstream battery technology for electronic equipment. Because lithium ions are the lightest alkali metal element and have the characteristics of smaller, lighter, and higher energy density, they quickly replaced nickel batteries.

  Lithium batteries are composed of other metal and non-metal materials such as iron phosphate, manganese, graphite, titanate, etc. However, the intercalation and extraction of lithium ions in the positive and negative electrodes can achieve the integration of electrical energy and chemical energy. Transform each other and finally complete the charging and discharging process.

  From 1991 to 2015, battery technology was not without progress, but it was developing slowly. At present, lithium-ion batteries are much higher than lead-acid and nickel-metal hydride batteries in terms of energy density, high and low temperature characteristics, and rate performance, but they are still difficult to meet the rapidly growing demand for electronic products, electric vehicles, etc.

  2. Two methods to increase battery capacity

  There are only two essential ways to improve the battery life of lithium batteries. One is to increase the battery volume to expand the charge, and the other is to increase the density within a limited volume to obtain long energy efficiency. The first method is now used in Tesla battery cars. If you remove the Tesla shell, you will find more than 7,000 densely packed 18650 batteries underneath, weighing 700kg, which is close to one-third of the total weight of the car.

  The second method is often used on mobile phones. Due to the limited size of mobile phones, it is impossible to stuff batteries into them indefinitely. However, through the efforts of researchers, the density of mobile phone batteries has been greatly improved. The application of high-energy-ratio anode materials has doubled the capacity of mobile phone batteries per unit volume.
