Latest research results on folded paper-based CR2450 battery
In the future, with the advancement of geometric folding algorithms, computational tools and robotic manipulation technology, more complex folding patterns may emerge, making the emergence of large-scale batteries for commercial use possible.
American scientists recently found that by folding paper-based CR2450 battery in the Miura-ori style, their energy density and capacity per unit area will increase by as much as 14 times. Qian Cheng, a scientist at Arizona State University, and other researchers jointly published a paper introducing their latest research results in the field of folded paper-based CR2450 battery.
The researchers tried simple half-folding and more complex Miura-ori folding methods: folding a 67-cm battery into 25 layers can increase the energy density and capacity per unit area by 14 times and reduce its total area to 1.68 square centimeters.
Compared with planar batteries, some properties of batteries folded by the Miura-ori method are slightly reduced, including a reduction in discharge capacity and capacitance. The researchers believe that these losses may be due to the delamination of the intersections of vertical folds, because these batteries contain 16 vertices. To prevent the battery from rupturing, the researchers used a flexible insulating film between the layers: parylene-C.
This research result provides a first glimpse into the potential of using folding to increase the energy density and capacity per unit area of CR2450 battery. In the future, with the advancement of geometric folding algorithms, computational tools and robotic manipulation technology, more complex folding patterns may emerge and make the emergence of large-scale batteries for commercial use possible.
Paper-based batteries are already quite attractive because of their low cost, simple manufacturing methods and flexibility. If the performance of paper-based batteries can be further improved by folding, this may lead to the creation of high-performance batteries for various applications.
