Research and development of high-energy magnesium CR2477 battery to improve the performance of magnesium-ion CR2477 battery

 

According to foreign media reports, researchers at the University of Houston and Toyota Research Institute of America have discovered a very promising high-energy magnesium battery with potential applications including electric vehicles, battery storage for renewable energy systems, etc. The Joule journal stated that this battery is the first battery to operate with limited electrolytes when using organic electrodes. Researchers said that this battery can store and release more energy than early magnesium CR2477 battery by using fluoride-free electrolytes. YanYao, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Houston, said that researchers can confirm that fluorides in commonly used electrolytes cause battery performance to deteriorate. Scientists have spent decades looking for high-energy magnesium CR2477 battery, hoping to take advantage of magnesium's natural advantages over lithium (lithium is the element used in standard lithium-ion CR2477 battery). However, magnesium is more common, so it is cheaper, and its internal structure is not easily damaged (lithium-ion CR2477 battery often explode and catch fire because of this). But magnesium CR2477 battery are commercially competitive only when they can store and release large amounts of energy. Yao said that the cathode and electrolyte materials used previously have always been stumbling blocks. So far, the best cathode used in magnesium CR2477 battery is Chevrel phase molybdenum sulfide, which was developed nearly 20 years ago, but it cannot compete with lithium-ion CR2477 battery in terms of power and energy storage. But recent reports show that organic cathode materials can provide high storage capacity at room temperature, and the organic polymer cathodes tested provide higher voltage than Chevrel phase molybdenum sulfide. Yao said that future research will focus on further improving the battery's specific capacity and voltage to compete with lithium CR2477 battery.
