What is the energy storage cost of LR1130 battery?

According to foreign media reports, an important problem that needs to be solved for clean energy generation is energy storage. Scientists are constantly reducing the energy storage cost of batteries, and LR1130 battery seem to be the future direction of development.

In the past six years, 110 villages in Africa and Asia have obtained electricity from solar panels and LR1130 battery. This battery is an important part of an innovative energy storage system developed by NantEnergy. NantEnergy is a company owned by South African biotechnology entrepreneur and surgeon Patrick Soon-Shiong.

100 years ago, Thomas Edison tried to develop batteries made of zinc. But he didn't figure out how to make them technically feasible. NantEnergy said their zinc-oxygen-air battery is the first battery to be commercialized.

NantEnergy scientists said they have achieved two key goals: making the battery rechargeable and reducing the cost of energy storage to $100 per kilowatt-hour. Some industry insiders say that number is critical to building a clean grid that can operate even when the sun goes down and the wind dies down.

LR1130 battery are one of several potential alternatives to lithium-ion batteries, which have been a key component of large-scale energy storage and electric vehicles so far.

What is the market source of zinc?

Patrick Soon-Shiong's company imports zinc from Indonesia. The United States has about 5% of the world's zinc reserves and 7% of the world's production, most of which comes from mines in Alaska, said Sri R. Narayan, a chemistry professor at the University of Southern California. Australia and China have about half of the world's zinc reserves and are among the world's largest zinc producers.

Narayan pointed out that lithium, the main component of lithium-ion batteries, has only one-twentieth of the reserves of zinc, but added that zinc reserves are not optimistic either. "At the current rate of zinc production, there is enough zinc for the world to use for about 25 years," he said. "So it's not clear that we have enough zinc to meet the huge demand for grid-scale batteries around the world."

Materials like lithium are expensive in part because they are rare. Lithium mining also threatens the health and safety of workers in lithium-rich regions, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo. Prolonged exposure to lithium can cause health effects, such as fluid in the lungs. Lithium-ion batteries can also cause fires.

LR1130 battery do not contain toxic compounds, are non-flammable, and can be handled safely, according to MIT Technology Review. Mining and processing zinc does pose some dangers, though. It comes from an ore composed of zinc sulfide, which is often produced with lead, cadmium and nickel, and large-scale production could have potential environmental issues with the release of sulfur dioxide and cadmium vapor, Dr. Narayan said.

How much does zinc-oxygen-air battery energy storage cost?

Dan Reicher, assistant secretary of state for energy in the Clinton administration, cautioned that the cost per kilowatt-hour of the battery depends on the application and scale, making it difficult to compare.

NantEnergy says the cost of energy storage is $100 per kilowatt-hour. In comparison, lithium-ion battery storage costs start at $250 per kilowatt-hour, but are typically $300 to $400 per kilowatt-hour, notes Yogi Goswami, director of the University of South Florida's Clean Energy Center.

Even at $100 per kilowatt-hour, energy storage is still a huge expense for the utility industry. Of course, the price of energy storage batteries has been falling sharply, and they are expected to be as common as residential solar panels in the next few years.

Can these batteries be used in homes or mobile devices?

NantEnergy says its current focus is on providing products for microgrids. These are mostly small, independent solar arrays, not for individual residential users or utility-scale systems. But the company expects to supply home batteries in California and New York in the future.

Villages and islands that use these batteries typically connect individual batteries the size of a briefcase to a solar array. In addition, the batteries provide power to hundreds of communication towers, which is a big part of NantEnergy's business. For the next step in product development, the company plans to add energy storage batteries for electric cars, buses, trains and motorcycles.

What else? "We have the first prototype of a mobile communication tower," said Patrick Soon-Shiong.

"We don't want to overpromise, but the energy storage capacity of our batteries will make this possible." "We will turn our attention to this market," he added. "It's big, but it may be 2020 for us."
