NiMH No. 7 battery companies seek technological breakthroughs
Due to overcapacity in the industry, some power battery companies are transforming into power tool batteries in order to seek a turnaround. At present, the technology research and development of some scientific research institutes is out of touch with the actual market, and companies do not have the strength to carry out research and development.
Serious overcapacity
A reporter from China Securities Journal recently conducted a survey at the 5th China (Shanghai) International Battery Industry Exhibition and found that overcapacity has become a concern for many companies. In order to seek a turnaround, some power battery companies are considering product transformation, such as making small power tool batteries. A survey data provided by the person in charge of Gaogong NiMH No. 7 battery Booth to a reporter from China Securities Journal reflects the current situation of industry surplus to a certain extent. The main key materials of lithium batteries include positive electrodes, negative electrodes, electrolytes and separators. Due to rapid expansion and limited demand, there is a surplus in many links.
According to research, as of June 2013, there were 171 cathode material manufacturers in my country. The main cathode materials include lithium cobalt oxide, ternary materials, lithium manganate, and lithium iron phosphate. 52 of the 171 companies produce more than two cathode materials. The overcapacity of lithium iron phosphate materials is the most serious, with the overall capacity utilization rate below 10% and most companies losing money. In addition, the average prices of natural graphite and artificial graphite, anode materials, have been falling since 2010. Affected by overcapacity and downstream effects, the average price of anode materials is expected to maintain an annual decline of 5%-10% in the next three years.
In terms of separators, due to limited demand growth and the large amount of new production capacity launched in 2012, separator prices have dropped significantly this year. With the overcapacity and price decline of cathode materials and separators, funds have begun to shift to electrolytes with relatively stable gross profit margins. However, as production increases and demand is poor, electrolyte prices are also falling.
Falling material prices have caused NiMH No. 7 battery prices to fall. In the first half of this year, the average price of NiMH No. 7 battery cells in my country dropped significantly, and the price of battery cells in the mid- and low-end markets dropped even more. Prices in the low-end market are chaotic, and soft-packed batteries with a unit price of less than 4 yuan per 1AH have appeared. The Gaogong NiMH No. 7 battery Industry Research Institute predicts that NiMH No. 7 battery prices will continue to decline in the next few years as enterprise production costs decline and market competition intensifies.
The falling prices of key materials for lithium batteries have also begun to affect the profitability of related listed companies. Xinzhoubang's main products include electrolytes. It stated in its semi-annual report that lithium-ion battery chemicals have seen a significant decline in product prices due to intensified competition in the industry. Although sales volume has increased, operating income still fell 8.19% year-on-year. Chengdu Aircraft Integrated subsidiary AVIC NiMH No. 7 battery is mainly engaged in the NiMH No. 7 battery business. In the first half of the year, the revenue of Chengdu Aircraft Integrated lithium batteries, power systems and ancillary products increased by 85.64% year-on-year. However, due to falling prices, the gross profit margin decreased by 17.1 percentage points year-on-year, resulting in the company's overall gross profit margin. A decrease of 5.62 percentage points compared with the same period last year.
Technological breakthrough becomes key
Business people believe that the main reason for industry overcapacity is not demand, but lack of technology. Shenzhen Xinyongfeng Technology Co., Ltd. is mainly engaged in power battery industrialization technology and supporting products. Liu Lijun, the company's technical director, said in an interview with a reporter from China Securities Journal that insufficient battery reliability is the main reason for the downturn of the entire industry. The reason for insufficient reliability is not that the battery production equipment is not good, but that the battery structure design is unreasonable, which brings many hidden dangers. These hidden dangers are exposed during use, causing consumers to have no confidence in the product, forming a vicious circle.
NiMH No. 7 battery accidents have been frequent recently. In his view, the root cause is the unreasonable battery structural design. The gap between the positive and negative electrodes of the NiMH No. 7 battery causes structural instability and eventually problems. He believes that in terms of the structure of a single battery, the positive and negative plates should be closely coordinated, reduce parallel connections, and use larger batteries in series.
