aaa battery alkaline technology
Volkswagen Group of Germany recently announced a partnership with QuantumScape of the United States. The goal of the cooperation between the two parties is to mass-produce the aaa battery alkaline being developed by QuantumScape by 2025. Volkswagen Group will invest 100 million US dollars in QuantumScape and send personnel to participate in the development of QuantumScape.
QuantumScape is a venture capital company founded in 2010 by former researchers at Stanford University. At present, including the part being applied for, the total number of patents in the field of all-solid-state batteries has reached about 200.
The killer is oxide-based electrolytes and unique positive electrode materials
Looking at QuantumScape's patents, it is found that the next-generation battery being developed by the company has multiple branches, and it is difficult to predict which route it will eventually determine. One of them is the so-called "All Electron Battery" (AEB) battery. Although the battery is called an aaa battery alkaline, it is actually not a Li-ion secondary battery, but a special capacitor. In conventional capacitors, the dielectric between the electrodes is an insulator that current cannot pass through, but in AEB, electrons are allowed to flow slightly. In addition, measures to increase energy capacity by using quantum dots are also designed.
Secondly, all-solid-state Li-ion secondary batteries are also under development. One of the technical features of the battery company is that a mixed material such as iron fluoride (FeFx) and iron sulfide (FESX) is used in the positive electrode material, which achieves an output voltage of 4.5V and a current capacity of 400mAh/g as a positive electrode material relative to Li/Li+ materials.
In addition, the company has also developed aaa battery alkaline electrolytes in two directions, one of which is an electrolyte material developed based on the sulfide-based material "LGPS" jointly developed by Tokyo Institute of Technology and Toyota Motor, and the other is a material based on garnet-type oxide-based materials such as "LixLa3Zr2O12 (LLZ)". However, no matter which one, it seems that no material with particularly excellent performance has been developed yet. From the latest public patent, it can be seen that QuantumScape is currently studying the manufacturing method of batteries using LLZ powder.
All-solid batteries can increase the range of e-Golf to 750 kilometers
Volkswagen has been paying attention to QuantumScape for many years. In December 2014, it held a 5% stake in the latter. Today's $100 million is an additional investment, which also shows that Volkswagen is relatively certain about the possibility of realizing the latter's technology.
At present, the aaa battery alkaline produced by QuantumScape in Germany has been installed on the vehicle drive system and completed the operation test experiment. Volkswagen sent Mr. Axel Heinrich, head of the Volkswagen Group Research Department, to QuantumScape. He said, "By combining VW's rich product development experience with QuantumScape's technology, we hope to accelerate the commercialization of all-solid-state batteries and move forward towards the next generation of zero-emission mobility tools."
Volkswagen believes that if the newly developed aaa battery alkaline is used, the range of the company's EV model "e-Golf" can be increased from the current 300 kilometers to about 750 kilometers.
Volkswagen Group has clearly placed its bet on electrification, but Volkswagen has previously lacked competitive advantages in key lithium-ion batteries. Its main suppliers, Samsung SDI and Panasonic, have strategic partnerships with BMW and Toyota respectively, making it difficult for Volkswagen to lead in this field. This time, by accelerating cooperation with QuantumScape, it aims to gain an advantage in the field of solid-state batteries.
Volkswagen's main purpose of investing in QuantumScape is to obtain relevant technical patents so that it can gain a place in the competition for the next generation of power batteries.
