The research group successfully increased the battery capacity by developing a "graphite-silicon composite material" that replaces the graphite electrodes used in existing batteries. The new electrode is made by injecting 20 nanometers (one billionth of a meter) of silicon particles between graphite molecules. The experimental results show that the lithium-ion battery produced by this new material is charged and discharged 100 times, but the battery capacity decay does not exceed 20%. Panasonic plans to improve this new material, hoping to increase the number of battery charge and discharge times to 500 to 1,000 times, and then commercialize it.
