New breakthrough in button battery 2025 technology Japan and South Korea have successively launched new batteries
Limited by the technical level of power lithium-ion batteries, new energy vehicles have low mileage, short life (low charge and discharge times), and high attenuation rate, which hinders the large-scale application of new energy vehicles. Recently, South Korea and Japan have successively announced breakthroughs in power lithium-ion battery material technology, and the cost of power lithium-ion batteries will decrease in the future.
South Korea: Power lithium-ion battery capacity increased by 45%
Information from the online version of the academic journal "Natural Energy" shows that a research team at the Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in South Korea has recently developed a cathode material for secondary batteries that can increase the capacity of existing batteries by 45%, that is, the range of electric vehicles will be increased by at least 100 kilometers on the basis of the current 200 kilometers.
The research group successfully increased the battery capacity by developing a "graphite-silicon composite material" that replaces the graphite electrodes used in existing batteries. The new electrode is made by injecting 20 nanometers (one billionth of a meter) of silicon particles between graphite molecules. In addition to increasing the mileage, the new technology greatly shortens the charging and discharging time, and the battery charging and discharging speed is more than 30% faster than existing batteries.
The industry predicts that this type of new battery will be easier to mass produce and will have a strong price competitive advantage in the future.
Japan: Developed lithium-ion batteries that do not require cobalt
Information from Japan's Panasonic shows that Japan has developed new lithium-ion battery materials that do not require the rare metal cobalt, and has trial-produced new lithium-ion batteries.
A research team led by Professor Yoshida Junichi of Kyoto University of Japan's Panasonic has developed a new organic material using lithium and carbon, and successfully trial-produced a new lithium-ion battery that does not use cobalt as an electrode material. The test results show that the battery produced by the new material has the same capacity as the lithium-ion battery with cobalt-containing materials as electrodes. This lithium-ion battery is expected to get rid of its dependence on cobalt and greatly reduce production costs.
Another advantage of lithium-ion batteries produced by this new material is that the battery life is longer and the attenuation rate is lower. The experimental results show that the lithium-ion battery produced by this new material is charged and discharged 100 times, but the battery capacity decay does not exceed 20%. Panasonic plans to improve this new material, hoping to increase the number of battery charge and discharge times to 500 to 1,000 times, and then commercialize it.
