New breakthrough! Stanford researchers are expected to make up for the design defects of lithium 18650 li ion battery

 

According to foreign media reports, although lithium metal anodes can promote the development of next-generation high-energy density battery systems, the practical application of this material is hindered by the shortcomings of large reaction of metal lithium to liquid electrolytes, low efficiency and safety hazards in practical applications.

 

To solve this contradiction, a group of researchers at Stanford University demonstrated the use of nanodiamond films to protect the surface of lithium metal, lithium can be electroplated under the film and prevent parasitic reactions with the electrolyte.

 

Nanodiamond films not only have excellent electrochemical stability, but also have extremely high modulus to inhibit lithium dendrites. Because the pinholes in the surface protective layer will destroy the uniformity of ion flow, Stanford researchers have developed a unique double-layer structure to make up for the design defects, that is, defects in one layer can be screened by another complete layer.

 

The university team synthesized the nanodiamond interface through microwave-plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) technology, which is very low cost in coating applications.

 

The nanodiamond interface has an extremely high modulus of over 200 GPa, the highest value actually measured in artificial lithium metal coatings reported to date, and can effectively prevent the growth of lithium metal dendrites.
