High nickel content in 1.2V Ni-MH battery is currently a major technical trend choice
At present, the theoretical energy density of lithium iron phosphate in China is limited to 170wh/kg, and the energy density of mainstream ternary material batteries is NCM523-160~200wh/kg, NCM622-230wh/kg, and NCM811-280wh/kg.
Therefore, to obtain high energy density of power batteries, high nickel content in 1.2V Ni-MH battery is currently a major technical trend choice.
In the two ternary routes of high nickel materials NCM811 and NCA, NCA is easier to achieve an energy density of 300wh/kg than NCM811. However, the process requirements of NCA are more stringent, and the technical barriers are mastered by Japan and South Korea.
Break through the technical bottleneck.
my country's NCA battery started late, from research, debugging, and preparation in 2015; from installed capacity in 2016-87Mwh; to installed capacity in 2017-286.5Mwh.
NCA energy density continues to improve.
In 2017, Shanghai Delong mass-produced 3.2Ah, NCA battery cells with an energy density of 250Wh/kg. It is mainly used in Dongfeng and Xiaopeng Motors passenger cars.
In 2018, Tianpeng Power accelerated the promotion of NCA217000 batteries based on the original self-developed and mass-produced 145wh/kg energy density, which was used in SAIC-GM-Wuling E100 models.
In the first half of 2018, Tianjin Lishen successfully developed NCA monomers with an energy density of 302Wh/kg, a volume energy density of 642wh/L, 285 cycles (100% DOD, 96% capacity retention), and 710 cycles of 1C charge and discharge at 25°C (100% DOD), which laid a solid foundation for a higher cycle life of 1,500 times.
NCA materials are about to be mass-produced.
Domestic NCA materials have always been controlled by well-known Japanese and Korean companies such as Japan's Sumitomo Metal, Toda Chemical, and Nippon Chemical Co., Ltd.; South Korea's Ecopro and GSEM.
And Shanshan Co., Ltd., a domestic NCA material company, has standardized the production capacity of 7,200 tons of the Ningxia Phase II positive electrode project. It can produce NCA high-nickel ternary materials, and its positive and negative electrode material products have been sent to Tesla and Panasonic.
The NCA material production capacity of BYD is about 3,000 tons/year, and it has been sold to customers such as Panasonic.
In addition, domestic material companies such as Rongbai Lithium Battery, Bamo, and Changyuan Lithium Technology also have relevant NCA material layout news.
NCA material batteries can generate higher energy density, which makes it possible to meet the higher mileage of automobiles. But it also has its biggest disadvantage, which is thermal stability. At present, Tesla is the world's relatively mature car company that uses NCA ternary batteries. This is because Tesla's efficient battery management system and vehicle design PACK.
Here, the author believes: In order to effectively avoid the thermal runaway safety that may be caused by the high energy density of NCA. Chinese NCA battery manufacturers and NCA-using car companies should work more closely together to achieve rapid and healthy development of the entire ternary material NCA lithium battery industry.
