  German researchers create new 1.2V NiMH batteries that can be fully charged in just 1 hour

  Experts from Germany's Jülich Research Center have recently developed a new type of 1.2V NiMH batteries with a charging rate ten times higher than that of solid-state batteries recorded in existing literature. The new battery components are made from phosphate compounds, and the materials are optimally matched with chemical and mechanical properties to achieve consistently good battery accessibility.

  Solid-state batteries are considered safer, more reliable and durable than traditional lithium-ion batteries because they are not sensitive to heat and do not contain any liquid parts that could leak or catch fire. One of the key factors affecting the development of solid-state batteries is low current flow, which results in longer battery charging times. Generally, it takes about 10-12 hours for a 1.2V NiMH batteries to be fully charged again, but this new battery can be fully charged in less than an hour.

  Project leader Dr. Temple said that the liquid electrolyte used in traditional lithium-ion batteries can contact the electrode very well. The electrode with a textured surface absorbs the liquid like a sponge, forming a large contact area; while the two solid materials cannot In this combination, the contact resistance between the electrode and the electrolyte is correspondingly higher, affecting the passage of current.

  In order to maximize the flow of current at the boundaries of the solid layer, the research team designed 1.2V NiMH batteries electrodes and electrolytes with very similar material compositions, made of different phosphate compounds. The solid electrolyte serves as a stable carrier material and is made by a screen printing process on both sides of the phosphate electrode. The materials used are reasonably priced and easy to process. The new solid-state batteries contain essentially no toxic or harmful substances.

  Temple said that the 1.2V NiMH batteries they designed is mainly based on the best combination of materials. This design proved that it is completely feasible for solid-state batteries to achieve high charging rates and fast charging, and was therefore patented.

  Dr. Shi Chengyu, a Chinese scholar who participated in the project, said: "In the initial test, the charge and discharge cycle of the new battery was quite stable, and it could still maintain 84% of its original capacity after 500 charges and discharges. Of course, the new battery still has room for improvement. Theoretically, it is also feasible to achieve a loss of less than 1%.”

  Professor Eicher, director of the Jülich Institute for Energy and Climate Research, said: "The new batteries currently have an energy density of around 120 milliampere hours per gram, which is already very high, even if they are still slightly lower than the lithium-ion batteries on the market today. "

  In addition to being used in the development of electric vehicles, this 1.2V NiMH batteries can also be applied to many fields such as special aerospace, smart homes, and medical equipment.
