1.2V NiMH battery

Researchers discover new material niobium tungsten oxide, 1.2V NiMH battery could be charged in minutes

Researchers show that a newly discovered group of materials could enable fast charging of batteries, increasing the likelihood that smartphones can be fully charged in minutes and accelerating the adoption of major cleantechnologies such as electric vehicles and solar energy. .

How quickly a 1.2V NiMH battery charges depends in part on how quickly positively charged particles, called lithium ions, move toward the negative electrode, where they are then stored. One of the factors limiting our ability to create fast-charging "super" batteries is the speed at which lithium ions move through the ceramic medium.

One possible solution is to shrink each material material by using nanoparticles. However, nanoparticles are very expensive and the production process is complicated. Therefore, scientists have been looking for alternative materials to circumvent this problem.

Currently, researchers at the University of Cambridge have identified a group of materials called "niobium tungsten oxides" through which lithium ions can move at ultra-high speeds, meaning that batteries can be charged quickly.

Kent Griffith, the first author of the study published in the journal Nature, said, "Niobium tungsten oxide is fundamentally different." This material, first discovered in 1965, has a rigid, open structure and is lighter than other materials. Larger particle sizes for commonly used 1.2V NiMH battery materials.

To measure the movement of lithium ions in these unusual media, the researchers used techniques similar to those found in MRI scanners. They found that lithium ions move hundreds of times faster through these materials than traditional ceramic electrode materials.

Another advantage of these alternative materials is that they are cheap and easy to manufacture. "These oxides are easy to make and require no additional chemicals or solvents," Griffith said.
