Brief introduction of Toshiba and CBMM developing 14500 battery for electric vehicles

Toshiba (Toshiba) issued a press release on the 19th, announcing that its business company Toshiba Infrastructure Systems & Solutions has signed a joint research and development agreement with Sojitz (Sojitz) and Brazilian mining company Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgiae Mineraca (CBMM) to jointly develop negative electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries using niobium titanium oxide (Niobium Titanium Oxide, NTO). The goal is to develop next-generation lithium-ion battery materials for electric vehicles (EV) with high energy density and rapid charging.

In 2008, Toshiba launched the lithium-ion battery product SCiB using lithium titanate, and then successfully trial-produced a high-capacity next-generation lithium-ion battery (hereinafter referred to as the next-generation SCiB) using NTO as the negative electrode material in 2017. Compared with the current lithium-ion battery negative electrode material using graphite, the NTO negative electrode can achieve twice the energy density. Toshiba also plans to mass-produce the next-generation SCiB in 2020.

Niobium is a rare metal. CBMM is the world's largest niobium producer/seller. Sojitz is one of CBMM's shareholders and is CBMM's general agent in the Japanese market. Toshiba hopes to reduce niobium procurement costs and develop products that balance performance and price by cooperating with Sojitz and CBMM.

According to reports, Toshiba's goal is to develop battery products with a range that can be increased to three times the current range under the same size. It also hopes to cooperate with Sojitz and CBMM to develop lithium-ion batteries with a capacity that can be increased by 50% compared to the current ones. When installed in EVs, it can run 320km after charging for 6 minutes. According to reports, Mitsubishi Motors' i-MiEV and Suzuki's EV both use Toshiba's lithium-ion batteries. Last year, Toshiba established a battery joint venture with Suzuki and DENSO in India, planning to invest 20 billion yen to build a factory in India.

According to YahooFinance data, as of 9:58 am Beijing time on the 20th, Toshiba rose 1.20% to 336 yen, far outperforming the Tokyo Stock Exchange's second section, which fell 0.23%.
