According to foreign media reports, Swiss battery manufacturer Ecovolta is introducing a new safety concept for its lithium-ion batteries, a technology that has been proven to reduce the risk of electric vehicle battery fires and battery explosions.
Ecovolta uses battery connectors made from electrolytically nickel-plated cold-rolled strip that automatically disconnects the failed cell from the rest of the battery pack when current increases.
In the event of mechanical damage to the battery pack, once high current flows through the damaged area, the temperature in that area will increase. In traditional battery solutions, the battery is directly affected as its material expands rapidly, causing the battery to explode and catch fire.
In contrast, in the case of mechanical damage to an Ecovolta battery pack, only the local temperature at the cell connections increases. The joints then merge to separate the damaged battery from the intact battery assembly, and the rest of the battery pack will still function. Comprehensive laboratory testing has shown that if the capacity of separate cells is lost, the capacity of the entire battery pack will only be reduced.
All Ecovolta power batteries use this safety concept, enabling battery capacities from 10 Wh to hundreds of kWh, voltages from 12V to 600V and any ideal battery shape. In addition, Ecovolta’s evoTraction Battery also adopts this concept. The company's standard power battery has a capacity density of 200Wh/kg and requires no active cooling.
