After this website interviewed relevant experts to explore the story behind
the spontaneous combustion incident of electric vehicle batteries, a statement
disclosed by SGL Carbon on its official website attracted our attention. The
statement said that the company will cooperate with Weilai Automobile to produce
power battery casings made of carbon fiber plastic, which is 40% lighter than
aluminum alloy materials of the same volume and has higher strength. More
importantly, this case will support more OEM solution products and better
support NIO’s battery replacement plan.
SGL Carbon previously disclosed on its official website a statement on its
cooperation with NIO and a sample of the power battery casing it developed.
After Weilai disclosed an investigation report that its ES8 model
spontaneously ignited while charging during maintenance at a Xi'an 4S store on
April 22, the issue of passive protection of electric vehicle power batteries
has attracted widespread attention from electric vehicle consumers and
practitioners. Previously, the ES8 power battery and its cooling plate had been
impacted, causing a short circuit and even catching fire. NIO's cooperation with
SGL aims to improve the power battery casing to a higher strength and lighter
casing, which will effectively improve the passive safety of electric vehicle

While Weilai has launched measures to improve the passive safety of power
batteries, other car companies have also elevated power battery recycling to a
strategic position. Volkswagen will start recycling 1,200 tons of batteries at
recycling centers in Germany in 2020. This is closely related to Volkswagen’s
global electric vehicle layout. In our country, Volkswagen has launched two
electric vehicles, e-Golf and e-Bora. According to Volkswagen's previously
announced plan, the company will produce 1 million electric vehicles per year by
2025, and the electric vehicle power batteries produced by the company have a
service life of 10-15 years. After the power of these batteries has
significantly weakened, Volkswagen remanufactured some of the batteries into

partnerships with Guangxi Huaao, Nanjing Jinlong, Chery Wanda, and Wuzhoulong

great achievements in the field of rare metal recycling of scrapped power
batteries. It is reported that dismantling and extracting lithium, cobalt,
nickel, manganese, copper, aluminum, graphite, separators and other materials in
power batteries in my country can theoretically achieve a profit of 42,900
yuan/ton. According to incomplete statistics, the cumulative electric energy of
scrapped electric vehicle power batteries in my country will exceed 25GWh in
2020. Faced with such a huge amount of scrapped batteries, the "rich ore" effect
of this market is highlighted. It has become an urgent problem in the industry
to prevent some power batteries that have reached the scrap standard from being
simply refurbished by unscrupulous practitioners and then flowing into the
market as qualified products, thereby causing greater risks of spontaneous
combustion or more serious accidents.
The spontaneous combustion, recycling and remanufacturing of electric
vehicle power batteries will become a hot topic in the entire automotive field
as the popularity of electric vehicles accelerates globally. At present, active
protection of power batteries may become an important measure to control
spontaneous combustion of the entire vehicle caused by internal short circuits
in the power battery. In addition, the regulation of the power battery recycling
industry and the reasonable mining of industrial "rich ores" have become issues
