South Korea develops foldable 32700 battery with a conversion efficiency of 15.2%
According to foreign media reports, South Korean scientists have developed a foldable solar cell that can be bent in half without breaking, with a conversion efficiency of 15.2%.
Common solar panels are hard and brittle, and are not thin and soft enough to bend and bend, so they can only be installed on flat areas such as roofs and ground. In recent years, scientists have also developed special and soft solar modules through organic dyes, graphene or copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin-film solar energy in order to develop flexible solar modules.
Foreign media reports pointed out that Pusan National University in South Korea hopes to develop "foldable" solar panels. Il Jeon, the corresponding author of the paper, said that unlike flexible electronics, foldable devices have higher requirements for bending, and the folding curvature radius must be 5mm. Traditional ultra-thin glass substrates, metal oxide transparent conductors and other materials are difficult to achieve. At most, they can be made flexible, but they cannot be completely folded.
To this end, the Pusan National University team targeted single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and made conductive films with carbon tubes with a diameter of 0.6 to 1.8 nanometers, which can withstand large repeated bending without breaking. The team first embedded the film on a polyimide (PI) substrate, filled the gaps between the carbon nanotubes, and finally doped molybdenum oxide in the SWNT-PI to improve the conductivity and allow the carbon nanotubes to attach to the substrate.
In the end, the researchers concluded that a solar cell with a thickness of only 7 microns and a curvature radius of 5mm will not break after 10,000 folds. As a solar cell, it also performs well, with a conversion efficiency of 15.2% and a transparency of 80%.
Jeon believes that in terms of conversion efficiency and mechanical stability, this should be the best performing flexible solar panel to date.
