There are three main characteristics of nickel hydrogen batteries
The charging and discharging characteristics that demonstrate the working characteristics, the self discharging and long-term storage characteristics that demonstrate the storage characteristics, and the comprehensive cycle life and safety characteristics. They are all determined by the structure of nickel hydrogen batteries, manifested in the environment they are in, and their notable feature is that they are greatly affected by temperature and current.
1. Charging characteristics: The charging cutoff voltage of nickel hydrogen batteries is generally set at 1.4V. When the charging current of nickel hydrogen batteries increases and/or the charging temperature decreases, it will cause the charging voltage of the battery to rise. Generally, a constant current of no more than 1C is used for charging in ambient temperatures between 0 ℃ and 40 ℃, while charging between 10 ℃ and 30 ℃ can achieve higher charging efficiency.
If nickel hydrogen batteries are frequently charged in high or low temperature environments, it can lead to a decrease in their performance. For fast charging above 0.2C, charging control measures are essential. Repeated overcharging can also reduce the performance of nickel hydrogen batteries, so protective measures for high, low, and high current charging must be in place.
2. Discharge characteristics: The discharge platform of nickel hydrogen batteries is 1.2V. The higher the current and the lower the temperature, the lower the discharge voltage and efficiency of nickel hydrogen batteries. The maximum continuous discharge current of nickel hydrogen batteries is 1C-2C.
The discharge cut-off voltage of nickel hydrogen batteries is generally set at 0.9V, and the IEC standard charging and discharging mode is set at 1.0V because stable current can be provided below 1.0V, while slightly smaller current can be provided below 0.9V. Therefore, the discharge cut-off voltage of nickel hydrogen batteries can be regarded as a voltage range of 0.9V~1.0V, and some nickel hydrogen batteries can be subscript to 0.8V. In general, if the cut-off voltage is set too high, the capacity of nickel hydrogen batteries cannot be fully utilized, and vice versa, it is easy to cause over discharge of nickel hydrogen batteries.
3. Self discharge characteristics: refers to the phenomenon of capacity self consumption of nickel hydrogen batteries when fully charged and stored in an open circuit (without load). The self discharge characteristics are mainly affected by environmental temperature, and the higher the temperature, the greater the capacity self consumption of nickel hydrogen batteries after storage.
