The latest research and development of a new type of 502030 battery is more powerful
Solid Energy Systems, a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has developed a new type of 502030 battery that is not only smaller in size, but also has a power supply capacity twice that of the currently widely used lithium-ion batteries. According to the company's founder Qichao Hu, the secret of this battery is that it has a very thin high-energy lithium metal foil, which has more ions than the widely used graphite. More ions mean greater energy capacity, and the energy density of this battery is twice that of lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, they are also safer and easier to recharge repeatedly.
Qichao Hu said: "Because the energy density is twice that of lithium-ion batteries, we only need to reduce the size of the battery by half to reach the current level. We can also use the same size and get twice as long continuous power supply time. Not only that, Solid Energy has also found a way to directly manufacture this battery through existing lithium-ion manufacturing machines. In other words, compared with most so-called battery research breakthroughs, Hu's new battery technology can be applied to commercial devices relatively quickly.
In its early days, the company's existence was always covered by A123 Systems, a lithium battery spin-off company of MIT. Moreover, A123 Systems filed for bankruptcy in 2012, so even if Hu had made a better product, it would have been difficult to keep investors from being upset.
Interestingly, A123's misfortune led Hu to develop products at its abandoned headquarters. A year later, SolidEnergySystems won the MIT Entrepreneurship Competition's accelerator competition, with a prize of $100,000 (although it actually only took $12,000).
"But doing research and development in A123's old factory allows us to use materials that can be directly put into existing production lines," he said. "From the perspective of understanding real manufacturing, making real batteries allows us to understand what materials can be used in these processes, which in turn helps us design new materials."
