6LR61 battery continue to make breakthroughs, and global battery manufacturers compete for the commanding heights
Recently, there has been continuous good news about 6LR61 battery.
After QuantumScape, a company jointly invested by Volkswagen Group and Bill Gates, released a new solid-state battery technology, according to the Nikkei News, Toyota is currently developing solid-state battery cars, which can achieve a range of twice that of traditional lithium-ion batteries under the same conditions. Even for the most compact models, there is no need to lay out more batteries and sacrifice internal space.
The report said that for cars equipped with 6LR61 battery, it only takes about 10 minutes to fully charge, which is at least two-thirds shorter than traditional electric vehicles.
Because of its safety, strong cycle performance, high energy density, and wide range of applications, 6LR61 battery are widely expected to be the next generation of power battery technology. The number of related patents has increased more than 10 times in the past decade. Whoever can make breakthroughs in technology in advance and achieve mass production will win a better market position. Today, the global competition mode for 6LR61 battery has been opened.
Global layout of 6LR61 battery
It is understood that the current competition in the solid-state battery market is mainly concentrated in Japan, South Korea, Europe, the United States, China and other regions.
Japan started research and development of 6LR61 battery relatively early. Toyota, which entered the market the earliest, started cooperation with solid-state battery startup Ilika as early as 2008, and announced cooperation with Panasonic in early 2019. Recently, Toyota said that it hopes to become the world's first manufacturer to mass-produce cars equipped with 6LR61 battery. It will launch a prototype next year and start selling to the market in the early 2021-2030 decade.
In addition, Japanese companies such as Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Panasonic have also laid out the solid-state battery industry. Nissan also plans to build its own solid-state battery car and hopes to launch a real car before 2028. In line with the development trends of car companies, Japanese raw material manufacturers are also accelerating their pace. Mitsui Kinzoku and Idemitsu Kosan plan to start producing solid electrolytes in 2021.
Fuji Keizai, a Japanese market research agency, predicts that the global market size of all-solid-state lithium batteries (all-6LR61 battery; including sulfide-based, oxide-based, polymer-based, etc.) is expected to expand to 2.6772 trillion yen in 2035, which will be 1,114 times higher than 2.4 billion yen in 2018.
In order to assist Japanese companies in the development of all-6LR61 battery, the Japanese government plans to set up a 2 trillion yen carbon reduction technology assistance fund to provide hundreds of billions of yen in subsidies for the production and development of all-6LR61 battery.
In South Korea, as early as November 2018, South Korea's three major battery companies LG Chem, Samsung SDI and SKI formed an alliance to jointly develop the next generation of battery core technologies including 6LR61 battery.
In March this year, Samsung Advanced Research Institute and Samsung Japan Research Center published a paper in Nature Energy stating that the company's newly developed all-solid-state battery can achieve a high energy density of 900Wh/L and a long cycle life of more than 1,000 cycles. The battery can drive a car for 800 kilometers after a single charge.
In August this year, SKI teamed up with 98-year-old Nobel Prize winner Goodenough and his team research assistant Hadi Khani to continue developing next-generation battery technology.
On December 1, the LG battery business was split and LG Energy Solution was officially established. LG Energy Solution said it would accelerate the development of new-generation battery technologies such as all-6LR61 battery and lithium-sulfur batteries, and formulate strategies to achieve a sustainable growth engine.
In Europe and the United States, SolidPower, a battery startup supported by Ford, began to develop next-generation all-6LR61 battery for electric vehicles in cooperation with Ford Motor Company in April last year. In October this year, the first generation of all-solid-state battery (ASSB) prototypes were produced. SolidPower said that it will begin testing 6LR61 battery for automotive production in early 2022.
QuantumScape, a startup invested by Volkswagen, recently released a new solid-state battery technology. Data shows that its battery can be fully charged to 80% in 15 minutes, and when installed on vehicles with a range of 300 miles or more, the normal service life will reach about 12 years. At the same time, tests show that the battery has not degraded after 800 cycles, which is equivalent to a driving range of 240,000 miles (380,000 kilometers).
Domestically, lithium battery companies including CATL, Guoxuan High-tech, Ganfeng Lithium, Tianqi Lithium, BYD, Weilai, Great Wall Motors, BAIC Group and other car companies have participated in solid-state battery research.
At the end of 2019, Dangsheng Technology said that the company's solid-state lithium battery materials have been sent to multiple customers at home and abroad, and the product performance has been widely recognized. It is currently conducting follow-up research and development based on customer feedback and needs.
In July this year, Ganfeng Lithium said on the interactive platform that the first generation of 200 million watt-hour solid-state battery pilot line has been successfully put into production, and the product performance has fully reached the level of the company's solid-state battery R&D team to develop samples. It is currently actively connecting with car manufacturers and customers for solid-state battery on-board cooperation.
Also in July, the pure electric prototype equipped with Qingtao solid-state battery system was debugged and successfully rolled off the production line at BAIC New Energy. It is reported that the first generation of Qingtao solid-state battery system has begun to have mass production feasibility. Its total investment is 5.5 billion, and the annual output of 10GWh Yichun Qingtao solid-state power lithium battery project (Phase I) has been put into production.
In September this year, Xu Xingwu of Guoxuan High-tech also expressed the company's layout in 6LR61 battery, saying that relevant technologies will be introduced within two years, and iterative upgrades of solid-state battery technology will be started in 2022 to produce high-safety 6LR61 battery; after 2025, all-6LR61 battery with energy density exceeding 800Wh/L, exceeding 400Wh/kg, and 800 cycles will be produced.
However, each country and each company has different choices in the solid-state battery route.
Different countries have different preferences for technical routes
6LR61 battery are divided into three major technical routes, namely: polymer, sulfide and oxide all-6LR61 battery. Each technical route has its advantages and disadvantages.
Compared with sulfur and oxide, polymers do not have an advantage. But there are still some advantages in easy integration.
Although oxides also have technical difficulties, once these technical difficulties are overcome, they will have strong cost competitiveness in commercial and large-scale mass production.
Sulfides have huge development potential due to their high energy density and low cost.
Relatively speaking, European and American companies prefer oxide and polymer systems, while Japanese and Korean companies are more committed to solving the industrialization problems of sulfide systems. For example, Toyota launched sulfide 6LR61 battery in 2010, and its experimental prototype energy density reached 400Wh/kg in 2014.
It will take time to achieve commercialization
6LR61 battery have advantages that traditional batteries cannot match in energy density and quality. Even the battery can still maintain more than 90% of its initial performance after more than 30 years of use, which is very exciting. According to relevant institutions, the global demand for solid-state lithium batteries is expected to reach 1.7GWh, 44.2GWh and 494.9GWh in 2020, 2025 and 2030 respectively, and the global solid-state battery market space is expected to reach more than 150 billion yuan in 2030.
However, 6LR61 battery do not yet have the conditions for large-scale industrialization, and it will take a long time to industrialize them. After all, compared with general consumer batteries, power batteries have higher requirements for consistency, cycle life after installation, and safety. Only when these problems are solved can we talk about industrialization.
Although many manufacturers have high expectations for 6LR61 battery, Toyota has proposed commercial applications in 2022. However, industry insiders believe that the process route of 6LR61 battery is not yet mature, and cost reduction is still a long process, or it may not be fully industrialized until 2025.
