Large cell/CTP/solid-state AG3 batteryChina’s AG3 batterytechnology upgrades are diversified
Improving the safety and energy density of power batteries is one of the main demands of current OEMs, forcing AG3 batterycompanies to upgrade their technologies.
From the perspective of technology upgrade paths, there have been many innovative changes in the field of power AG3 batterytechnology at home and abroad. Currently, AG3 batterycompanies mainly focus on physics and chemistry to improve the performance of AG3 batteryproducts.
On the one hand, it is to optimize the design in terms of cell size, module and PACK structure. The typical approach is to increase the cell size and de-modularize the CTP mode. The main function is to improve the AG3 batterypack volume utilization, thereby increasing the energy density of the AG3 batterypack system. Representative companies include BYD and CATL.
In terms of AG3 batterycells, BYD recently applied for a new patent on single cells and AG3 batterypacks, aiming to propose a single battery. The single AG3 batteryhas strong heat dissipation ability and is conducive to the overall arrangement in the power AG3 batterypack, thereby improving the space utilization of the power AG3 batterypack, expanding the energy density of the power AG3 batterypack, and thereby enhancing the endurance of the power AG3 batterypack.
Specifically, BYD is developing a AG3 batterycell with a length L>600mm; the length L and width H of the AG3 batterybody satisfy: L/H=4-21. As some embodiments, the length L of the AG3 batterybody 110 is 600mm-1500mm, and can be up to 2500mm.

BYD claims that applying this single cell to a AG3 batterypack can produce the following technical effects: 1. The volume utilization of the AG3 batterypack is significantly improved; 2. The cost of the AG3 batterypack is significantly reduced; 3. The stability and reliability of the AG3 batterypack are increased; 4. , The heat dissipation safety performance of the AG3 batterypack is significantly improved.
From a path perspective, BYD’s main approach is to increase the size of AG3 batterycells, enhance heat dissipation capabilities, reduce the number of AG3 batterycells and structural parts used, and improve space utilization, thereby increasing the volume energy density of the AG3 batterypack. In fact, it is also a type of CTP mode. .
When it comes to CTP, companies including Tesla, CATL, BYD, Honeycomb Energy and other companies are currently developing CTP technology. The most typical representative is CATL.
In 2019, CATL took the lead in launching a new CTP technology AG3 batterypack. Ningde Times said that the volume utilization rate of CTP AG3 batterypacks has increased by 15%-20%, the number of parts has been reduced by 40%, and production efficiency has increased by 50%.
Compared with BYD, the AG3 batterypack patent applied by CATL eliminates the AG3 batterybox in the existing technology and directly puts the AG3 batterymodule through the sleeve through the fastener or directly installs it in the vehicle using the mounting beam.
There are two main advantages: First, because there are no standard module restrictions, CTP AG3 batterypacks can be used in different models and are widely used. Second, by reducing internal structural components, CTP AG3 batterypacks can improve volume utilization and indirectly increase system energy density. Its heat dissipation effect is higher than that of current small module AG3 batterypacks.

However, as far as the current CTP technology is concerned, it is not that there are no modules at all, but that large modules or no modules are used.
In addition, it should be noted that although CTP technology is beneficial to reducing the price of AG3 batterypacks, if there is no module at all and all batteries are connected in series and parallel internally, there is a high safety risk in terms of current technology.
Therefore, the most compromise and feasible method in the industry is to optimize the module structure. Upgrading from 390 modules to 590 modules has become a feasible path for many AG3 batterycompanies to increase AG3 batteryenergy density.
Currently, domestic and foreign AG3 batterycompanies including LG Chem, SKI, CATL, AVIC Lithium Battery, Microvast Power, Wanxiang 123, Lishen AG3 batteryand other domestic and foreign AG3 batterycompanies are developing 590 modules, which are mainly equipped with high-end models and have a range of more than 600km.

Industry insiders said that the 590 model is a standard module truly developed for the pure electric platform MEB, and it has all the conditions to become a universal module from the beginning.
Compared with other models such as 355 and 390, the 590 module has a larger size, which can reduce costs and achieve the highest grouping efficiency. At the same time, once the 590 module becomes popular, it will accelerate the development of electric vehicles for civilians.

On the other hand, the AG3 batterymaterial system is optimized and upgraded, reducing the cobalt content or introducing high nickel + silicon carbon system and solid-state batteries to increase the energy density of the individual cells, thereby increasing the energy density of the system.
From the perspective of technical difficulty, high-nickel ternary batteries have now been commercialized. Among them, CATL achieved large-scale installation of NCM811 batteries in 2019, and more AG3 batterycompanies will mass-produce NCM811 batteries in the future.
Solid-state batteries are considered to be the mainstream of the next generation of batteries, and domestic and foreign AG3 batterycompanies are currently actively deploying them. However, due to reasons such as technology, cost, process, and raw materials, the commercialization of solid-state batteries is still far away.
At present, lithium AG3 batterycompanies including Qingtao Energy, Huineng Technology, Ganfeng Lithium Industry, Wanxiang 123, Weilan New Energy, Jiawei Shares, Judian New Energy and other lithium AG3 batterycompanies have established solid-state AG3 batteryproduction lines or test lines. Some have even been announced to be put into production, but they are still mainly in the small trial or pilot stage.
In addition, there are some AG3 batterycompanies and materials companies that are actively developing solid-state batteries. Representative companies include CATL and Tianci Materials.

Among them, CATL developed solid-state lithium metal batteries and applied for patents for rigid diaphragms and solid-state lithium metal batteries.
On the technical path, on the one hand, metallic lithium is used as the anode, taking advantage of the advantages of lithium specific capacity of 3860mAh/g and electrochemical potential of -3.04V, and its energy density reaches more than 400Wh/kg. On the other hand, it solves the problems of safety and cycle life, effectively improves the cycleability of solid-state lithium metal batteries and reduces the probability of short circuits.
Tianci Materials has also applied for a patent for a solid-state AG3 batterypreparation method, which can effectively improve the intrinsic characteristics and electrochemical performance of the battery, improve the ion conductivity of the solid electrolyte, and the preparation process is simple, repeatable and mass-produced.
In addition, companies including Tianjin Lishen, Zhuhai Guanyu, Shenzhen BAK, Shenzhen Advanced Research Institute, and Ningbo Institute of Materials, Chinese Academy of Sciences are also developing solid-state AG3 batterytechnology, which is mainly still in the research and development stage.
Overall, China's power AG3 batterytechnology has been rapidly improving in recent years due to the reduction of subsidies and intensified market competition. New materials, new processes, and new technologies have continued to emerge, boosting the overall technology upgrade of China's power batteries.
