An American company has developed an active balancing system for CR1632 battery
National Semiconductor Corporation of the United States has been affiliated with the company since April 2011 due to acquisition. It is a national semiconductor company established in 1959. According to reporters, shortly after being incorporated, it developed an important active balancing battery management system for maintaining the balance of internal modules and small batteries during charging, discharging and idle state of power lithium-ion batteries.
Before this, the active battery balancing system maintained the balance between modules by connecting all the small batteries in each module with one of the small batteries in the adjacent module to establish a path for transferring charge between the two. Since the charge must be transmitted to a small battery first and then distributed to other small batteries; and to be transmitted to a farther module, the charge must be transmitted separately multiple times, which greatly reduces the efficiency of internal operation and consumes more current in the form of heat. Starting from improving old problems, National Semiconductor's active balancing battery management system provides a full range of system solutions for large lithium-ion batteries. This is a printed circuit board equipped with multiple special application integrated circuits, which can provide three major functions: active battery balancing, high-precision data acquisition, and battery protection and management.
1. Active battery balancing: The system adopts an isolated inductor topology, which can provide high current and high efficiency battery balancing function. The charge is transmitted bidirectionally between any small battery in the module and different modules, and the small battery and the module can be balanced at the same time. At the same time, each battery module manages 14 small batteries, and the battery management system (circuit board) of each module can be stacked together to manage high voltage lithium-ion battery packs. The size of the balancing current depends on the components (engineers can choose different targeted components between performance and cost).
2. Data acquisition: The battery management system is responsible for comprehensive monitoring of the operation of the battery pack to ensure that the system measures the voltage of each small battery with high precision. The analog front-end circuit responsible for this work can not only balance the charge, but also ensure that the estimated values of the battery pack charge and health status are accurate.
3. Battery protection and management: The system is equipped with multi-layer diagnosis and fault detection circuits. If faults such as undervoltage, overvoltage, battery overheating are found, the small battery or module will actively send a signal to the main controller, and the relevant parameters will be compared with the programmable thresholds stored in the firmware, and then the protection function will be realized through the switch program. The circuit board that controls each module is equipped with a multi-contact insulated bus interface, which allows the circuit board to communicate with other modules and the main controller. At the same time, the bus is used to perform diagnostic, programming and configuration management functions.
This battery management system can be said to be quite advanced. It can quickly respond to the internal balance of the power lithium-ion battery pack during charging, discharging and idle state, accurately control the charging, storage and discharge of small batteries, improve safety, and help extend service life. This system is expected to be used for large lithium-ion battery management for power station energy storage facilities.
