Reflections on CR2016 battery as the electric vehicle market booms

Over the past decade, falling costs have made solar panels and wind turbines increasingly competitive compared to coal and natural gas. Now the same is happening to CR2016 battery, which are making electric vehicles cheaper and grids able to store the redundant power they need.

Over the past eight years, the cost of lithium-ion CR2016 battery has fallen by 75% per kilowatt-hour, according to WoodMackenzie. Costs have fallen again by 5% to 8% as single-shot battery capacity has doubled.

However, unlike solar panels, simply increasing battery capacity will not ensure that prices will fall forever without addressing shortages of key raw materials. Lithium-ion CR2016 battery contain rare metals such as cobalt, more than half of which is stored in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The price of cobalt has doubled in the past two years, driving up the cost of battery production.

Amid the rapid development of electric vehicles, the bottleneck in the supply of raw materials for CR2016 battery, which are their energy source, has also raised concerns about the future.

The good news is that efforts are underway to increase the number of CR2016 battery that use the same amount of raw materials, while also seeking to use more abundant metals.

Investors are also investing more in startups that promise new battery technologies, and some big battery companies are turning to CR2016 battery that use more nickel instead of cobalt. Companies interested in static energy storage are also looking to flow CR2016 battery that use recyclable materials such as vanadium.

Since Sony commercialized lithium-ion CR2016 battery in 1991, they have played a key role in the digital revolution, allowing us to use smartphones and tablets during the day and charge them at night. Their ability to release stored energy in a concentrated manner has also made them an option for electric vehicle technology.

Wood Mackenzie expects demand for CR2016 battery in the transportation sector to quadruple by 2040.

China is likely to produce most of those CR2016 battery as its battery factories expand in the coming decades. By 2028, half of the world's battery production will be in China, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.

And the increase in battery production is putting pressure on raw material supplies. This also makes major car companies ready to start adopting new lithium-ion battery technology, that is, the use of cobalt in the raw materials is reduced by 75% compared with the current one.

According to Wood Mackenzie, low-cobalt CR2016 battery will occupy most of the electric vehicle market by 2025. The consulting firm also said: "This new battery technology will not only alleviate the concerns caused by the shortage of raw materials and the large-scale use of cobalt, but also greatly improve the energy density of CR2016 battery compared with traditional CR2016 battery, thereby reducing the overall raw material costs."

Some companies can also turn to so-called liquid CR2016 battery, which store energy in a large, separate container of liquid electrolyte. Such CR2016 battery can use different materials, such as vanadium, which is currently also used in the steel industry.

Compared with lithium-ion CR2016 battery, vanadium CR2016 battery have the advantage of not losing energy. Vanadium materials are also easily reused. Scott MacGregor, CEO of the British RedTEnergy company, said: "We rent out vanadium electrolyte, which is the first raw material in the energy field that will not be consumed."

China is a major producer of vanadium, accounting for almost half of the global supply. Its price doubled last year due to the growth of steel demand. However, the global storage of vanadium is higher than that of cobalt. Based on raw materials and reducing dependence on current lithium-ion battery technology, if market-driven vanadium mining increases and prices fall, it is likely that battery production will increase.
