　　GM announces it will invest US$28 million to expand battery research and development laboratory

　　According to the U.S. Automotive News, GM CEO Mary Barra issued a statement that day saying that GM will invest US$28 million (approximately RMB 191 million) to accelerate battery research and development this fall and expand its laboratory outside Detroit. . The "additional significant upgrades" include new testing laboratories and high-end equipment to accelerate the construction of next-generation batteries.

　　Barra previously said that with the advent of a new generation of electric vehicle platforms in 2021, GM's electric vehicle business is expected to become profitable, which is also a critical year in GM's electric vehicle strategy. GM plans to sell at least 20 pure electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles globally by 2023.

　　Barra said that the investment will be used for GM's global technical support center, which is located in Warren, Michigan, USA. It is mainly responsible for testing and verifying the integration of batteries and vehicle electrical systems. Since 2017, GM has expanded the laboratory equipment coverage to 9,290 square meters. A GM spokesman claimed that the move cost an investment of US$6 million (approximately RMB 41.02 million). In 2013, GM invested US$20 million (approximately RMB 137 million) to expand the laboratory to 7,897 square meters, three times the original size.
