These batteries rely on delicate electrochemical reactions that can be disrupted by improper handling, leading to reduced performance or even hazards like overheating.

First, avoid extreme temperatures. Lithium-ion batteries perform best between 20°C and 25°C. For devices stored for extended periods (e.g., seasonal tools), maintain a 40–50% charge to prevent self-discharge from depleting the battery completely.

Fourth, protect against physical damage. Avoid dropping or puncturing the battery, as this can damage the separator between electrodes, causing short circuits and thermal runaway. Inspect for swelling, a sign of gas buildup from internal damage—discontinue use immediately if swelling occurs, as it indicates a safety risk.

Finally, update device software. Manufacturers often release updates that optimize battery charging algorithms, preventing overcharging and managing temperature during use. Regular updates ensure the battery management system (BMS) functions effectively, extending the battery’s useful life.
